Fuel system question

I have a '96 and '97 GSX 787. I'm thinking the system is supposed to hold a little bit of pressure to assure fuel delivery. My '96 has slight cracks in the gas cap seal and the check valve under the seat leaks down slowly if I blow air into the system. Yet it cranks fine and runs great. The '97 has good gasket and check valve. If setting in the sun and open up the gas cap a lot of pressure is relieved. It takes veeeeery long to start, then runs great. Will start right back up, but if it sets several minutes takes a long time again. Can it be building too much pressure? Can the relief valve in the side of the body be stopped up? How the hell do you get to that thing anyway?

too much pressure in the fuel tank can cause vapor lock andother thing you can try on the 97 is a primer to get the fuel to the carbs it is not a good idea to block the vent it can cause too much pressure to build up and therefor cause the fuel tank to burst. I'd just go with a primer two or three pumps and you should be good to go.
