Fuel Gauge Wiring Question

Hey everyone,

I purchased a '96 XP recently, and I'm starting to get down to fixing the little things. I noticed the fuel gauge isn't working, in that it always shows a full tank. I ordered a new float, and when I was starting to work on the tank, I noticed the wiring from the tank to the gauge wasn't hooked up. When I looked at the wiring on the gauge, the previous owner connected the two wires for the gauge together and heat shrunk it.

Why do you think the would they do that? I've attached photos of the wiring. Please let me know what I should do, thanks!

Yes, that is done so that you don't have the low fuel warning constantly when your fuel baffle sending unit breaks which is very common.
Measure the resistance of the two pink wires off the baffle and that will tell what's wrong. If open circuit, your F1 fuse is out. If 90 ohms when the tank is not empty, it's your float. Both easy fixes but you'll probably need a new float but they are only about $12.

Perfect. I already have the new float, I'll throw my multimeter on it. I just didn't want to start pulling it all apart until I figured out why this previous guy did this. Thanks!

I threw the multimeter on the baffle and sure enough, it was 90 ohms with a nearly-full tank.

I replaced the float, and it's fixed. Thanks!
