I have a 96 xp and had the fuel sensor replaced twice since i had it. Last replaced fall of 2008. it has gone out again is there a reason this keeps failing. Is there another type of gauge i can install , this baffle sensor is very expensive. Also could it just be the gauge

Rusty,
When you say fuel sensor, you are talking about the fuel baffle...correct?
Pull the plug and check for resistance. As the float moves up and down it changes the resistance readings. If you are not getting any reading there is a great sticky in the "How To" part of this web site on how to repair your fuel baffle.
If you are getting resistance then it is probably the float. It has a magnet attached to it. It has probably fallen off, or the float has become saturated with gas. You can buy a new float on ebay for just a few dollars.

Check the baffel

pull the baffel out of the tank i found on some seadoos that the magnet accually comes out of the float and sticks and reads empty what you can try is seeing if the magnet came out and if it did you can replace the magnet with a new one from seadoo for 15 -20 bucks.
