ok so as many of you know i recently acquired a 96 xp with a new SBT shortblock in it...this weekend i threw a starter on it from another ski and she fired right up and ran decent..so i went to the lake for a test run and found that it will start and idle ok in the water but as soon as i give it gas it will die unless i choke it then as soon as it gets going top end it good...so i went home and started maintenance.....so far i have rebuilt the whole fule system which was very messed up..he had a direxct line going from the return nipple on the baffle to the carbs???dont understand that??? anyways replaced lines the RIGHT way took carbs off and cleaned and in the midst of cleaning i found that they were surprisingly clean.... drained all OIL lines and replaced drained oil tank....cleaned raves ..very dirty.... also removed the gas tank after discovering that the fuel in the carbs was BADLY VARNISHED and clenaed the gas tank....so i now have a few questions ...... by the way checked compression and its at 149 in each

1) how could the ski run with the main fuel line drawing from the return nipple on the baffle...
2) i need to flush the case to get the old oil out..what is the best way with the engine installed
3) what are my high and low speed screws supposed to be set at ..they are off and not the same
4)anything else im forgetting

update.......found the settting for the low speed screw..manual says all the way in the out 1 turn....but still cant find anything about high speed screw...FYI the black plastic cap is missing on the mag carb high speed screww so i have no idea where it set..please help carb guys

The high speed screw is all the way in, I can double check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that's correct, I just did mine in the spring.

Oh, and I ain't gotta clue about flushing out the crankcase.

Lou

thanks lou if thats true about all the way in mine are WAYYYYYY off...LOL as far as the flushing goes..i just want to get EVERY DROP of oil thats in it out i just ordered a gallon of XPS and the oil thats in it now looks like chainsaw oil LOL ...any thoughts on how the ski could have run with the inlet and return lines reversed on the carb

Should be all the way in.
I read where one carb should be set different through by 1/4 turn.

Ill try to find it

im surprised noone knows how to flush the crank case oil in a 787 ..LOL...most guys are prolly working

You could flush it but you will waste some oil in the process.

Put some paper towels/rags down and disconnect line. It should drain out.

Theres got to be something just have to find it.

You can't access the counter balance oil on a 96 787. It's sealed and the oil is added during assembly. The only way would be if you're sbt motor is a later case that has a fill plug. This plug is located on the case on the exhaust side of the below the pto cylinder.

I think he is referring to the oil supply for the RV gears, in which case I agree with flushing new oil through, old oil out to a cool whip container or something to catch it until it runs clean. If the engine came from SBT, it should already have the CB oil supply filled. (If not, SBT has some explaining to do) ;)

no im not trying to do anything with the counterbalance shaft...just the rv oil i drained the oil out of the tank but want to run XPS oi in it so i need to get the oil out of the RV gears in the case...does anybody know how to do it with the engine in the machine

Just pull the line and let it drain out.... I used a siphon pump on my engine but it is a 717 and not a 787

i pulled the line but there is still some in the case i guess i should be ok its only a small amount but i dont know what kind of oil it is and i run XPS full synthetic only ........anybody know about the high speed screw setting..????? is it all the way in

Brock, I just got home and looked up the carb. settings for a 96XP, Low 1 out, High 0, popoff is 23-43. I would set the popoff closer to the low end.

thanks lou just in time buddy im getting ready to head out for the day ...thanks guys ill keep the thread updated on this project

Hey Brock how ya been? Is your dad all recovered from the surgery last year?

I used an electric oil pump a couple years ago to get the old oil out of the case. It just has like 1/4 or 3/8 tubing that i fed down into the case thru both the feed and return lines. then I blew thru the return line and it push a little more oil out the feed line.

HEY JAKE!!!! havent seen ya in a while you have been to busy giving direction to people on your other thread LOL......yeah dad is doing great but now we just got hit with some more bad news...the doc says his heart is only working 23% of its value so now he needs a heart transplant...... the doc say after all these surgerys and new organs he could commit a murder and about 4 people would be charged and he wouldnt be one of them LOL

So do you go out? How did it run?

Did you ever do oil flush?
I tried searching and other than using a pump its let gravity do its job.
Then add new oil until it starts coming out other end.

Also still on hunt for Dr's quote on opening MAG HS to prevent leaning.
Something to do with the crank spins and advances the timing of front piston
Heres a good reference for your jetting / NS size / HS and LS

Brock, I used compressed air to blow the oil out of both my 787s when I changed th oil. You have to be careful so you don't blow out the seals. don't blow a 100psi in there. I think I used around 30 psi and got most if not all the oil out of the motor. There's oil that pools in the galleys and turns into black nasty and it all comes out when you
push air through there.

I used my big compressor with a blow gun that had a tapered tip so it fit in the hose perfect. Just don't pressurize the case but send enough air in to blow it all out.

It wasn't you then.
It was a member who's dad was thrown off ski or something and he got hurt but it wasn't serious.
It was a while back so my memory isn't that good.

You got the ebay one?
