sure thing, trust me i've been on both side of the coin,
I've bought 2 ski's, 2 trailers, and a truckload of parts for other members because I happen to be 30 minutes away from a deal when he was 300 miles... and in reverse I've done the same by calling in a favor or two. (I still feel terribly guilty about sending OCOD out to pick up a trailer for me and he got a ticket on the way back..., and I don't feel much better about eltoro getting his truck stuck in 12 inches of mud trying to get a GSX out of some asshats backyard...)

But it all comes around.

the big rule until I know someone well enough was that it either had to be a steal of a price so that I felt comfortable if I got hung out to dry, but once the relationship is established i'm quite liberal myself.

actually the last 3 big purchases I made were all for somebody else :)
 
Haha right. Just tell him "I'm a military member working out of country" "I'd like to use Paypal and have my shipper come get it". I say that because that's how the scammers respond but in your case it's actually true.

it's a damn shame because that's almost verbatim what I said! haha I told him my wife could give him cash if he was headed this way anytime soon, so maybe that will help convince him
 
i've only done it a few times, but whenever I ask to have things shipped, e.g. truck parts, i tell them the forum I'm a member of, and how active I am, with my screen name, as well as my ebay userid, and all the times, (only twice) they were willing to ship, these were off of CL that is

I think Matt is at least an hour away, thats a little too far.
its 7-8 hours for me, but might be worth the drive but I hate to drive 16 hours round trip for two dogs.
