I just bought a 1996 GTX and took it out for the first time yesterday afternoon. RPM's were in the 6800 - 7000 range and top speed was about 48MPH. Is this pretty much normal? It felt (and sounded) like it should be going a little faster.... I did find that my intake grate is damaged (about half of it is gone) and was told that this probably affected the performace a little? I've ordered a new intake grate. I was told that the rave valves probably need repalcing/rebuilding? what do you guys think?

Sounds a bit slow, eventhough the RPM's are O.K. Are you going by the Speedo or GPS, because it could be speedo error, you should top out about 52-55MPH. The intake grate will have little or no effect on the performance, in fact until you get the new grate, take the old one off.

I would first clean the RAVE valves, then check the wear ring.

One other thing, do you still have the grey tempo fuel lines?

thanks Lou, I'll check on the fuel lines this afternoon. I was using the speedo - no GPS with me. There were two other guys with me and all of our speedos were pretty much the same.... I'm guessing I can just a search on this forum for info on cleaning the RAVE valves and checking the wear ring? Another question - I need some oil and can get Amsoil INTERCEPTOR 2-Cycle Oil locally. Is this the correct oil (1996 GTX)?

thanks again for all the help.

If it's API-TC yes, also since you have rave valves you should use full synthetic. It would be best is you use what the former owner used, as long as its API-TC. I use Quicksilver PWC from Walmart.

And yes there are lots of threads on both cleaning rave valves, and the "dreaded grey fuel lines". Also check the how to section on this forum.
