Exhaust pinhole on 96 XP

Hey guys, I'm fixing to go pick up this 96 XP from the dealer, scored it with a trade for 400 dollars. No money has been exchanged yet, but the deal has been set.The guy called me today and said that the mechanic found a hole about the size of a pinhole in the exhaust... My question is this, should I run? I'm still fairly new to these skis and I don't want to get burned again. Any input anyone has would be more than welcome. Thanks guys.

this isn't uncommon. the 'correct' fix is to remove the pipe (since I assume the casting hole is where the hole is) and have someone tig weld it shut.

the more common approach is some JBweld or similar material and cover it up after you file it and make the hole cleaner.

My one ski did this. Lost all power and kept shooting water out of the pipe! I JBwelded that sucker, and after sitting over night, ran it next day, and to this day without issue.

correct, its the back yard hill jack way (jb weld) but i've seen that stuff hold for a long time but no, don't run it as is.
the proper way is welding, and generally your looking at about $40 for the job if you find the right guy.
to do it right the old plug gets ground off (the hardest part of the job) a plug made, and welded on.

and ideally at that point check all the plugs, in a perfect world, pull the pipe, sandblast all the plugs, inspect, repair anything questionable, rattle can it, and put it back on. its usually only a ocuple bux more to do multiple plugs, not like $40 each plug.

this will be a perfect time to get rid of the purple :)

or.. u can probably find a pipe with no holes, and have it sent to you for about that much as well, and just toss this one in the corner. there is NO shortage of 787 pipes out there in the market, most shop guys are tripping over them and wouldn't miss one in the least,

Well guys thanks so much for the input, but unfortunately the dealer made made a mistake on the jetski he was showing me. We made a deal on the one he was showing me, but e was shown me the wrong one... He wants 1500 for that one now, or 400 plus one of my jetskis for this other one... It wouldn't crank, just say there and spun. They shot inhibition fluid in it and it cranked, but then it Locke up and wouldn't do anything! He wants to "get it running" and sell it to me. What a load of bull!! I mean, am I in the wrong here?

Sounds like they are the definition of a stealership to me. I have a craphole shop near me that claims all the skis they sell are "on consignment" and they dont know anything about the machines. Locked up, blown cyl, on and on. They post on CL every two days at insane prices or BO. I wish that place would fold under but they have their fingers in docks and storage too.

I also heard every parts machine they have in their "pen" has a lien on it b/c the bank gave them loans on them. What a joke.

I don't know what the guys problem was, he said earlier that if I didn't want it, the price on the ski was going back up to 1500. Why he won't honor his deal is beyond me. They made me so angry. I've been over three or four times this week to talk and deal and work for that ski. An now he won't honor the deal he made. It infuriates me.

I talked to a lawyer, just to see I I even had a chance at getting the one they offered me. They told me this was called a bait and switch. I'm not quite ready to give this up just yet. They might have made a mistake but they cost me time and money. I even put one if my skis on the line for this thing! And now he wants to back out an dump some junker on me... Not happening.

Edit: sorry for the abundance of typos in that earlier post... I'm still seeing red lol.

forgive me for being harsh but...

you actually called a lawyer about a failed purchase on a 96 xp ?

sorry, seems weird to call a lawyer when nobody lost a limb

my thoughts are a deal is a deal only when money exchanges hands and papers are signed, the rest of the time its just discussion. 4 trips back and forth is too much anyway, if you can't work out a deal and have your trade in tow on trip #2, then your just doing a lot of tire kicking

just walk away and never go back there again, but please don't consult legal, ever.

Well let me explain before everyone thinks I'm a nutcase lol, I just wanted to see if the guy was jerking me around. I don't want to pursue any legal actions and the lawyer is a buddy of mine, so it's not like I'm out for blood or anything.

First time there the ski wouldn't crank, second time we talked about the trade, ski cranked before I got there, wouldn't crank when I got there. Went back today because the guy got it running, then he tells me it's the wrong one and he can't sell it to me for that price.

Shown me another ski, it won't crank, then it cranked, then it locked up and wouldn't do anything. No thanks.

It just floored me, he drug me back and forth with this darn thing and then he tells me I can't have it? It would make anyone mad. I don't think it was right and they won't be getting any business from me in the future. I just wanted to know where I stood. This isn't my first dealing with these people; but it will most certainly be my last.

Uh..I think you should be glad the trade didn't work out! If what your saying is that the ski you were trading for will crank sometimes then not crank and then maybe it will, or "it cranked right before you got here", it sounds to me like it was not worth the trade anyways. Most likely you would have gotten home and it would have magically decided not to crank again. If you don't mind me asking, which one of your skis were you going to be trading? I say you got the better end of this deal, and that end is that the deal did not work out.

I was going to trade in my 97 XP (doesn't run) but Now I just gotta go back and get it lol. All I heard the first time over there was "That ski was supposed to be 1,500 dollars, but since you caught the mis-priced listing, we're going to honor our deal!" bah, so much for that. I'm ready to get my turd of a ski back home and forget about this nightmare.

What's wrong with your 1997? Still a fun ski. Anything we can do to help you get it running?

thanks for the offers to help, I started a thread when I got it home from Louisiana. When I purchased it, the guy said all it needed was carb work... So much for that. I got burned badly on that ski. MPEM had a 20A in the 5A slot and I think he had jammed a 15A in the fuse holder which went to the VTS which is shorted out btw.

I'm a little bitter at myself for that purchase. but I found a mech that will do an estimate on the ski at no charge, so I'm gonna get everything check out there and then probably send the MPEM off to Nick so he can check it. I know that sucker is fried though.

I sure am glad I found this forum though, you guys have the be the best group of people on the net haha. It's nice just to have a place to vent every once in a while. :)

"Just needs _____" is code for the seller knows something is wrong and is hiding it.

aka BULL$hit.

there are several threads and pages on how to buy. If it just needed carbs, I'd have been able to verify that.

I've been told a ski is 'running' just needs starter! Guess what! I brought one!

just needs a battery?! Got one of those too!

compression test! got that!

Well I dont guess I need to move my thread back over to the 97 after all...

We went in to pick up the 97 yesterday, hooked it up to the trailer and was going in to tell the salesman no deal, and he calls me, right as I'm opening the door to the shop and tells me that they're going to honor their deal! Long story short, I got her home and am now the proud owner of a 96 XP! This is the model I originally wanted from hearing you guys talk about it before I joined. So glad everything worked out. She fires right up on the 2 beeps and man this thing just sounds mean haha.

It's not a big deal to me at the moment because I am still getting them ready for the season, but I wanted all of your opinions on this. When you first put the key on the post, you get one long beep. in the advanced diagnostics mode I get the 2 short beeps, indicating that the DESS post isn't reading the key properly.

There's something screwy going on though because it will do this for about five minutes of taking the key on and off one long beep after the other. Then, it will just switch and give me the two short beeps, fire right up, never misses a lick or even slows down.

I just thought it was weird because I've done this three or four times throughout the day, just two test it, initially one long beep, then you tinker with it for a little while and it starts giving you two short beeps and I can't for the life of me get it to give me that one long beep after that! that's the only problem. it's been set up to premix, all grey hoses have already been changed out, carbs look clean from what I can see (as in there's not an abundance of green goop like I have seen before LOL). other than fixing that pinhole on the exhaust that's it. I'm gonna take some pics tomorrow and put them up, this thing is pretty clean I think!

Watch for the RV oil line if you are running premix.

Sometimes the posts wear out. I have one from a 96 for $15, free ship if you want it.

I often lick the key on the water. Makes better contact. The metal tabs.... Looks stupid, but hey, I can then start my ski.

well, you lick your key...I blow on mine :)

My key doesn't beep at all but everything works as it should so never worried about it. I have a r&d pipe that is for a 787 and a r&d head that came with my 96xp that I'm willing to sell but not sure of it's worth both look to be in great shape.

Yeah I read a lot about the premix yesterday, made sure the big oil line was still attached, it is. But in all that digging I found another annoyance today :(

One of the fuel lines are disconnected! I'm not sure on this model where it goes either. It's one of the four lines that attaches to the fuel tank. Every other line is attached snugly so now I just gotta figure out where that one goes lol.

Sbr, I know what you mean about licking the key, last night I spit on it, licked it, blew in it, wiggled it, etc etc. ironically enough I think it's temp. Related! Reason I say that is because today was a warm day, and I got my two beeps all day long... Doesn't make much sense but whatever I guess haha.

Cold makes everything fail, but keep in mind. It was designed to be used 70+ degrees. So anything below that may cause issues.

I doubt they test snowmobiles in 120 degree heat...
