Erratic idle 787

Well here is an update.

Being that I put about 50 hours into diagnosing it over the holiday weekend, I got frustrated and took it to the dealer.

The dealer had it from Monday morning until today (wed) and found some minor things. Spark plug metal ends were a little loose and they supposedly made some adjustments to the carbs. They said they had it on the hose for a while and couldn't get the idle to drop any longer. $106 later, I picked it up and took it to the lake and guess what? As soon as I started it, the idle was low.

I took it back to them and now they are too busy to look at it until Tuesday of next week. I also found out from the mechanic that he performed no spark test, didnt check the timing or anything. So basically I paid him to do what I had told them I already did. What a joke!

So......I am still fighting the idle issue!

I bit the bullet and bought a coil locally today and had no luck with it. So now it has a new coil, wires, spark plugs, caps and a rectifier.

I went the coil route because I put a timing light on wires and it "seems" as though one cylinder might have a slight miss.

To back this up, I found out it is definitely getting fuel. Probably too much. I removed the silencer cover and sprayed a shot of starting fluid while idling rough and it almost dies.

So keeping on the low spark idea, I was able to swap a CDI box with someone locally. No improvement either.

So what's left? I figure either its the MPEM acting up or the carb n/s are leaking somehow.

I am TOTALLY FRUSTRATED and ready to sink it!

That is fustrating! The mechanic should of made good for his lack of performance imeadiately not next week. He's only going to bang you again for any labor hours going foward. I wish I could help but I'm as confused as you. I finally found a large flake of black paint in the little screen filter in the carb but it has caused the engine to run lean and fried one of the cylinders. So, I'm not a happy camper. I have two ski's and both are down now. Love this hobby! I still tend to think in your case that its a carb issue. Good luck

Who did the rebuild on the engine? Did they check the rotary valve clearance?

I performed the rebuild and I did check the RV clearance.

I have now found out it is running on one cylinder when idling low and rough. The MAG cylinder is not firing on it's compression stroke even when switching wires.

I had the opportunity to switch out my MPEM with a good one from a running 97 challenger and it cured the problem.

However, the 97 has an integrated CDI in the MPEM and mine is two separate modules. So now I am not sure which one is causing the problem. The CDI or the MPEM.

If it is the MPEM, I am not sure what I am going to do. I have looked into the MSD system, but I do not want to loose my factory tach.
