Engine Swap MPEM

I am new here and need some help. I have a 97 GTX that runs but needs body work. I just bought a 96 GTX hull with no motor that is in better condition. I am going to swap the motor. The owner of the hull I purchased does not have a key. What is involved in swapping the MPEM? I assume it will work with the keys I have once it is installed in the 96. I appreciate any advice or do's and dont's before I start this process.

I haven't looked at the 96 and 97GTX's but I'll bet they are different MPEM's. I have a 96GSX similar ski to the GTX and the MPEM's are quite a bit different. So you will need to change the wiring harness and the MPEM.

Since they are both the same hull shouldn't be that big of a job. Swapping the motors should be relatively easy (as far as swapping motors go). You will need an engine alignment tool, they are available for sale at SBT at $150.00 or rent for $75.00

I just opened it up and you are right. They are different. This is a lot of work for a missing key. I thought it would be a simple swap. If I get the motor hooked up can I get a new key for it. Does it need to be running or just hooked up to replace the key?

If it were me I think that I would keep the 97 mpem and change over the wiring. I personally have not had a problem with the 96 mpem, but I have heard that they are troublesome. Also it's probably gonna cost 125.00 to 150.00 for a new lanyard and the programming.

It's not gonna be that hard of a job, especially if you do it when the motor is out of the hull. To answer your question, no the motor does not have to be running to program the mpem, but everything needs to be connected.

D.E.S.S. POST is merely a wire transfer harness to connect the digitally embedded code thats in the key's magnet, to the MPEM.
Most DEALER's who sell the key will program the key's code into one of your mpems seven code slots for free. When the key is attached to the post, the MPEM will look for the secure code, in order to energize the mpem functions. TWO BEEPS mean ignition system is operationally ready to start the engine within 30 seconds. SINGLE BEEP means a non-useable key has been attached to the system post.

The MPEMs are different, I cant say if one is better than the other as I have personally never had a CDI go bad.

The complete box should swap right in. Then follow what bill said on the key.

late 96 models got the 97 box...at least a few hundred.

Nick, I'm comparing a 96GSX wiring diagram to a 97GSX wiring diagram, I know it's not a GTX, but there are considerable differences between the two. If you remember I've been down this road with adding the speedometer. Anyway a lot of stuff on the 97 gauge connections run through the MPEM on the 97 that are direct connections on the 96.

The major difference that I can see the 97 has the large square connections on the MPEM the 96 does not. I may be wrong but if you don't mind take a look. If you don't I'm gonna send my new GF, she's an exchange student from Australia to your house to straighten you out.

LOL yeah I've watched the vid a few times this morning...she looks like pam anderson before she turned into a modded slam pig.

The GSX and GTX are different animals...they didnt go with the big black panel in 97 like the GSX; it was still the grey box.

O.K., thanks, I guess that's what I get for assuming. In my opinion we're better off without the big connectors.

They are considerably different ang I am guessing it will have to be completely rewired if I swap them. Not sure how to post pictures or I would show them. I am going to swap the motor and go to the dealer to get a new key. I am going to part out the 97 when I finish if anyone needs parts at a reasonable price.

No, the wiring on the 96 & 97GTX is the same. I made an assumption that turned out to be wrong, I was comparing GSX which I thought was the same ski only smaller, I was wrong, sorry for the confusion.

So as it stands now you won't have to change the wiring from one hull to the other, you can just change out the MPEM and have a new key programmed.

Sorry, my bad.
