Engine overhaul recommendations?

Checked the compression with the engine warmed up and the new tester reads 125/120. Great news. Thanks all for the help, it wasn't in vain. I definitely learned a few things and hopefully this thread will help someone else out too.

I've got the same machine as you but 285 hours on it....maybe I should check the compression?

Don't think yours is just going to let go soon, my engine still runs great. Like you though, I'm going to replace the engine maybe this winter. I'm going the SBT premium route, that $800 you figured will end up costing you $3000 in the end if you mess something up. Better off spending the 1500 on a crate motor. If you think using a grinder on an engine is a good idea, you might want to go in that direction.

Actually, I don't think using a grinder is a good idea. I'm no engine expert but I have good mechanical abilities and have rebuilt engines. The most I've ever used on the mating surfaces of engine cases is my fingernail and maybe a razor blade (lightly, easy to gouge aluminum).

I'll be checking my compression every year now just to know if it starts degrading so I can plan for replacement.

Cool. My policy is that I'll work on anything but engines. It's not like crate motors for these things are that expensive in the big picture anyway.

I ride 'em till they blow and give SES a call lol. I seriously ingest water in my engine at least 5-10x a season and couldn't care less lol. I ride for FUN!

I love the handling and the looks of the 2000 era sea-doos though. I'll be keeping this one for a long time. I shudder at the thought of owning one of the newer 4-strokes just because of their complexity. Sure, they're faster and better on gas but I'm happy with my little "slow" gas guzzler.

Mine when it was newer went 65, 68 on a good day (at least that's what the speedo said). My friends 2004-ish 4 stroke was a lot slower all around. If you can deal with the gas and oil usage then they are fine machines.

Mine still does 58 according to GPS. That's on glassy water and my weight as far back as I can get and still reach the handlebars. Moving my weight to the rear gives another 2-3 mph versus riding in standard position. I'm 215lbs. I don't ride for speed normally though. I'm usually cruising at half throttle. Getting to be an old slowpoke.

Cool vids! Ever taken that Jeep down to Coal Creek OHV park in Oak Ridge, TN? I recommend it. You'd have a blast. Hundreds of miles of trails there.
