I have a 96 GTS and after losing the engine last year to a needle bearing I have decided to buy a new engine from SBT. Is there anyway I can go bigger without making any changes? The 587 is a good motor but I would like to have a bit more power. I want to stay with the single carb but I am not sure what my options are. Even if I were to only go to the 657 it would be better. But I don't want to make the change to twin carbs. Can anybody chime in?

Sure... you can put in a 720, and for the most part it's a bolt in thing. BUT... you will have to get all the electronics for the 720 to take advantage of the bigger engine, and it's higher red-line. Also... you will have to re-jet the single carb to get it to work.

The big issue is... SBT isn't going to take a 587 motor as a core for a 720. You would be better off finding an engine from someone parting out a 720 ski so you can get the electrical goodies too.

Jetting for a 97 SP (single carb 720) is:

Mian 135
pilot 57.7
needle 2.0
pop-off 21-37 psi
Low 1-3/4
high 0

Hope that helps.

Thanks Doc, I did not know SBT would not take a 587 for a 720. I guess I will just stay with the 587 its plenty of power for what I am going to do with it and better on fuel if I need to do 65 MPH across the lake I will just take the GTX or the boat.
