Hi Guys,

I have a 2001 XP and yesterday at sea it cut out. Yes much fun getting it back to shore...

When i connect the lanyard it has no beeps and won't start at all. I have cheked the fuse box (all good), check the battery terminal and it seems fine. Cleaned the lanyard.

this happend all a sudden out at sea.. didn't flip it or anything.?

Can anyone help..!

thanks in advance.

Salt water and DESS post...

Salt water and the magnetic ROM chip don't get along to well. When they start to put a little age on them, they tend to salt up and lose contact with the MPEM.

You can try and clean the lanyard with warm soapy water. Clean the post too. Don't use any electrical chemical compound type cleaner, it might damage the ROM....

Try to push the start/stop button 5 times without the lanyard being on. After the 5th beep, you should hear one long, one short beep. Then, put the lanyard on the post and hit the start button. Let us know what happens.

Hi Thanks for the prompt reply, When i take the lanyard out and press the start button, nothing beeps at all with or with out the lanyard connected..?! there is not 5th beep nor one long beep.. the battery is tested for 13v or rather.. could it be a faulty battery..? Also when checking the fuse box the one on top left of the front and the fuses are fine.. is there any other fuses to check..?

thanks for your help!

Set up...?

I'm not totally familar with your set up and I'm at work right now, so don't have the manual for it.

Your ski may not have the advanced diagnostic code but I thought it did. It's the 951 engine so I'm pretty sure it does have it. This diagnostic procedure is to push the start/stop button 5 times, in succession. Then you should hear those two beeps to signal that your in the advanced mode. Then, when your there, put the lanyard back on the ski. If the lanyard is communicating with the MPEM, it'll give you more beeps. This will give us more info on what your problem may be.

Your battery does have to have a full charge. If you have a dead battery, then this is why the ski died on the water. You need to take it to a auto parts shop and have them load test it. Our parts stores here do it for free. You can't just measure the voltage, you need to know what kind of cranking amps it has. You can also buy a hydrometer and test the acid yourself if you can't get it load tested.

In your last reply, I think you mis-understood the advanced mode. Look at that again and give it a try.

If you get no beeps at all, then it's likely the lanyard of post. Do you get any gages to come up when you push the start/stop button when the lanyard is on? If not, then your lanyard is not communicating.......

Ok .. So i took the battery out this morning - got it volt tested at 13v somthing. I havne't gotten it load tested. Either way i'll get another one to test if the battery is dead. I haven't checked wheather the gauges move when i connect the lanyard.. i'll check that tonight.. i'll also clean it with soap water. I'll give the sef diagnositic another go and hopfully get some kind of beeps happening.

I'll be on later on tonight to give the results.
Muchly appriciated !!!

Volts verses amps...

If your battery is a couple years old, then it's a good possibility that is your problem. These batteries are normally only good for a couple seasons.

You can have a battery not turn a motor over and still show 11 or 12 volts. It's the cranking amps that matter most. If you got a few cells that are dead or weak, then it wont' start the motor.

You could have a rectifier/regulator problem but you would have gotten some kind of warning that your charging system wasn't working.

I'm on night shift tonight. So, I'll be around, in and out, for the next 8 hours or so. Right now, it's about 10:00 P.M. where I'm at........

haha.. Lucky you.. okay well it's 3:10pm here and i'll be home looking at it at 5pm.. so i'll def have my wireless on in the garage.

hopefully its the battery.. i'll keep you posted.

Cool....

O.K... I'll be shutting down now, I got to go get some work done. I'll plug back into the forum in a few hours to check on your status.

locate the electrical box, that has the red cables protruding from it. Open that up, and on the side of the relay, you'll notice a fuse holder. Check that 20amp fuse, just to eliminate that possibility.

Thanks SeaDooya.. actually haven't checked that.. i'll do it when i get home. keep you posted.
