Engine health

I have a 2004 gtx sc with 233 hrs on it. I just bought the ski with 219 hrs on it. My concern is, I have had to add oil the last couple of times I took it out. What is the best why to check the overall health of the engine. I need to check to see if it is the oil sensors or if I really do need to add oil. Each time I add oil it runs fine after that.

Do a compression test and post the numbers.

I don't have a compression test tool at this time. Have a recomendation?

The very cheap models are often NOT accurate. Almost any local auto parts store will have them.

If you are loosing oil by gauging the dip stick then you have a problem. If you are simply getting a check engine light intermittently and the oil level on the dip stick is good, then it could be one of the oil sensors going bad. Oil sensors are a common problem with these 4-tecs.
