sorry for the belated reply but wrestling season is in full gear getting ready for conference, regionals and sectionals. I am having a problem with my xp.. It first started this summer when it wouldn't open up fully. when I hit the vts button the machine came to life for a brief period. I figured it was the ground to the block.;l cleaned it and replaced wire.. same problem... I replaced vts and the whole rear electrical box the previous summer.. Had no problems until the end of summer.. November came and I was taking my cousin from TN on the lake with my other skis. I started the xp on land and it ran.. we got to the lake and the start button didn't work.. I crossed the solenoid got it running.. It ran like sh*$.. Eventually It bogged out with backfiring and had to get towed back by my other ski.. Lil cold for november.. Tested the wires on the rear box and dess post.. All have continuity.. changed over mpem box same result.. I am at a loss.. only thing I can think of is the ignition coil but it would at least send current through the starter.. Still get two beeps when plug in lanyard.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!.. Last time i tried to take it to a repair place I ended up finding the problem myself after several nites..

It sounds like it could the the voltage regulator. Disconnect the red wire and see how she runs, if it smooths out replace the voltage regulator. Unfortunately to see if this is the problem you'll really need to ride it, but you should get a good indication on the trailer.

Also do you still have grey fuel lines? If you do you'll need to replace them and overhaul the fuel system. Also check the compression.

Hello, new to the forum as well. I'm looking for my 1st jet boat and I'm looking at a 2007 Challenger 180 for $12500 and a 2006 for $11,900. Also looked at some Utopias 2003 for about $11000. Any thoughts? Thanks, Rich

Hi Rich,

Welcome to the SeaDoo forum, you really need to start your own thread, I would suggest in the four tek boat section.

Hey lou thanks for your input.. I will try it this weekend when I get out to the shop, compression as well.. replaced all fuel lines two years ago... One question I have is that I have two functional MPEM(front electrical boxes and all components).. I have used both this year because I bought one thinking it was one of my problems last year so I bought a spare for cheap. Like I said, both work and when I change the boxes I would be changing the voltage regulator as well.. All fuses checked as well.. But I will definetely test your suggestions this weekend. Either way the start button does not work now and have continuity through all wires in the button all the way through the dess post. I've chased all wires to rear electrical box and cant find any continuity problems but that was just to the six pin connector.. I will also check continuity to solenoid when the button is pressed but this all still doesnt seem to add up.. It first ran good all summer, than bog at the end of summer, but hitting the vts switch helped.. a little later the start button didnt work and ran even worse. I had bogging problems last year but when I found the check valve by the front electrical box was clogged.. Replaced it and the issue was gone. That is the extent of work I have put into this machine other than cosmetic upgrades(gelcoat, reupholstered seat, painted plastic front where gauges attach)

did you rebuild/clean the carbs when you did the fuel lines? It sure sounds like the filters are clogged.

How bout the fuel selector? It needs to be disassembled and cleaned.

The backfiring is the puzzling part of this issue.

Oh...and before I forget, mark your calender for May30-june 2 for the Badgerland Jet Pilots "Dells Freeride" I will be there, as well as at least 10 other X-4s and 50-100 other riders!

Yes, carbs were rebuilt with the fuel lines... This has to be a electrical issue and do not know where to start considering I switched out the whole front electrical box, the opening up of throttle when I hit the vts button and than a little later the start button doesnt work..

It still sounds like its the voltage regulator/rectifier, have you tried disconnecting the red wire from the voltage regulator?

Another common problem on a 787 is the pickup coil inside the mag. cover can come loose, but I would check the voltage regulator first.

Lou

OK, so wrestling is done and checked everything, compression 155-157 continuity through starter switch and voltage regulator unpuluged.. starter stwitch has continutity.. only thing I didnt check was the pick up coil.. is that in the rear electrical box next to the solenoid?

The pickup coil is inside the front mag. cover, and you have to remove the cover to gain access. You can check if the pickup coil is operational with a test light. There is a white wire that runs from the pickup coil to the rear E-box. Go from the white wire to ground, turn the motor over and see if the light flashes.

It's been awhile since I've read this thread and I want to make sure we're not chasing ghosts. The engine is turning over but not starting, is this correct?

I just re-read the thread, I'm now thinking it could also be the rotary valve, but check the pickup coil first. Also if you haven't already done so you need to download a service manual.
