I picked up a 95 GTX recently and the owner told me the boot broke last time they took it out. I attached a pick. Does this rear boot need to be installed to ride? Would it take on water if I did not replace it? Just trying to figure out what it actually does and someones recommendation. Thanks.

WOAH! Yeah you'll be swimming in under a minute if you put it in the water now.

Yeah, that would not be any fun! Looks like I have to take the driveshaft out and replace it. What is the best place to find this part? I have read that some aftermarket carbon rings do not fit very snug. Also, will I have to re-align the driveshaft when I put it back together?

You don't have the carbon seal type. You will need to pull the pump of the back in order to slide the driveshaft back. No reallignment required.

You might want to replace the whole seal unit, there is a bearing in there that is probably cooked as well.
I prefer OEM parts for most of my parts.

you have to replace the black plastic insert, then put a rubber boot to a carbon ring. Search around.... I dont remember how but a few years ago I did it for a 96 xp i had. it worked out well. Oh and take the jet pump off and pull the drive shaft through the transom. Also there is a little c clip inside the hull that needs to be removed to pull it through.

The sttainless steel colar is your seal carrier, it has a seal on each end to hold the greas in and the water out, make sure these are in good shape. There is also a bearing in there that you will want to check. If it was me and I had it apart I would replace it, something went wrong at one point to break the thru hull fitting off.
This is the seal carrier if you need one. http://www.shopsbt.com/seadoo-jet-ski-driveline-rebuild-kit/70-101.html

The black thru hull fitting is repairable.
This is the thru hull fitting you will need to repair/replace the black one that is broken. It gets epoxied into the hole inside of the existing black one.http://www.shopsbt.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=76-101A-07

It's not a carbon ring setup!!! It's the floating seal carrier!! Totally different. Stop giving wrong advice please!!! The PO owner NEVER greased the bearing with a grease gun and that's why it seized and spun off the thru hull fitting. So to all you guys who have this seal type this is what will happen if you don't grease it EVERY other ride! When this happens your ski WILL sink! Replace the whole unit. Epoxy a new thru hull fitting and rubber boot. You will have to take jetpump off. Very easy job. Good luck!! ;)

As manolocross stated, you'll need to replace the thru hull adapter and rebuild the seal carrier and hope that you didn't screw the driveshaft up, but I'm betting it looks like some beaver with hot teeth have gotten a hold of that drive shaft.

Here's a few pics of a thru hull adapter replacement in a Challenger courtesy of Pale Rider, more can be seen HERE
