I have been having cavitation issues on one of my pumps. So just decided to change out both wear rings. when i pulled out the pump that was cavitating the drive shaft came with it. Does this mean my carbon seal is bad and thats where i was getting air to cause the cavitation?

Mine did the same thing when I changed out the pump. It just pulled out from the spline coupler. Not a huge issue, just make sure that when you re-assemble you might want to check the boot on the inside and slide the holding ring back further (aft) to create a tighter seal.

Well... at least we know where your cavitation was coming from.

Normally, there is a retaining clip on the driveshaft behind the stainless ring. This clip holds pressure on the carbon ring. (and will keep the driveshaft from sliding out)

The original design used a rubber O-ring. They would dry out, crack, and fall off. Once that happens, you loose the tension on the carbon ring, and you will get bad cavitation. When you put it back together... you will want to replace it with a new style metal C-clip. (I'm sure your cavitation will disappear)
