98 gsx limited started randomly taking on a ton of water. I took it home and ran it with a hose but no water went in the Hull. I tried it again at the lake and it filled up quick. I figured it was a Hull leak. I ran it today with a hose and heard a chain rattle noise coming from under the ski.I figured it was a bad bearing and then the engine shut off. No it wont turn over but the rubber boot around the driveshaft inside the Hull is twisted when trying to start it so I know its not the engine. Is there a bearing where the shaft exits the Hull? Any writeup on removal?

Yep sounds like your bearing carrier locked up to the shaft. Good thing you found it too, I have heard of others not finding it and sinking there ski. Anyway, like lou said. You'll need to remove the pump from the ski to pull the drive shaft. You'll need to pull it apart first to see if the driveshaft is saveable. But im sure youll definatly need the rubber hose, #9, and possibly the thru hull fitting, #14 in the diagram lou posted. Goodluck

I can't seem to figure out the shafts removal. Do I remove the 6-8 Allen bolts on the engine block to find a c clip holding on the shaft? How do I remove the ring with a grease zert?

I'm having trouble removing the ring with a zerk on it. Its number 10 on the diagram. Is that what is holding the shaft on?

What's probably happened is the needle bearings have welded themselves to the drive shaft, it means you're going to need a new drive shaft.
Will the ring turn on the drive shaft? Is the drive shaft off of the ski?

Lou

Yep. May take some force to get it off the shaft. If you cant get the bearing off the shaft and cant slip the shaft out of the ski from the back, then it will need to be removed from the inside, which may require moving the engine out of the way. Try to keep working with it by spraying it with rust penetrant and then trying to tap it off. Like Lou said. Itll probably need a new drive shaft anyway. Once you get all done with this project and get it running, lube that zerk fitting on the carrier after every run with good synthetic marine grease, it'll drive out all the water from the bearing and keep this from happening again.
Good luck

I just had a problem like this in a hx, there is an oring that gets wedged under the shaft, you will see a little slot on the shaft running parallel with the shaft, insert a pic tool and you will feel it, pic that out and it will separate and slide right out. I know this is an old thread but just giving info incase someone else has this problem
