I was out on the lake and got stuck on my 96 challenger. I think I ran something over and heard a pretty loud thud felt like it came from exactly under the boat by the entrance of the pump, but I didn't see anything in the water. Although the water was filled with crap from the rainfall and the river. The engine kept cutting off and I noticed there was no water running out of the back of the boat through the tiny hole thats pictured so I got towed in. I inspected the tiny tube which was filled with some dirt/mud. So I cleaned it out plugged a hose into the intake and started the boat at home. There appeared to be no issues.... But before I started the boat I inspected the jet. I took a pic as far as I could remember there used to be a black rubber ring which seems to be missing now. Is this ok should I be worried for more issues to come? What could I do to prevent possible troubles I see rust. I haven't been out on the water since. I recently rebuilt the carbs changed the pump oil, fuel filter, oil filter, rave valves, wear ring looks good so there should be no issues with those listed. Any ideas? or am i just paranoid? Thank you for your expertise and thoughts ahead of time. Websites saved me many a times.

Wow so water used to come out of that little hole? Sound like you did the right thing, and welcome to the club, it seems theres always something new.. :(

I am getting a little worried, I read the manual and it states that water should be coming out of that little hole, but mines has never had water come out that little hole? do you think i could be overheating my engine?

Mine did the same thing when the front half of the rubber ring left like yours did. I was using an aftermarket impeller and it put a ton of pressure on the seal (which wasnt there with the Rotax impeller). It too sounded like I hit something when it ate it. As I didnt have time to pull the pump right away I sealed it with Ultra-Black (to mimic the from part of the seal) and it held fine for the limited use I still needed last year. Boat ran great after the incident though. Replace the seal when you can for sure. The rust you see is common and just lightly on the surface.

Yes, the tell tale should be pumping water, mine is rather weak until I hit about 3000 RPM or so though.

Thanks for the heads up I will let you know when I get back in the water haven't had a chance yet. Hopefully it runs with no issues. Ill look up Ultra-Black. What if i do not replace that rubber seal? I really hope I don't have to reply with more questions if the boat doesn't run smooth.

How did you make out?

The seal keeps debris out of the spline plus a thin film of grease in. Replace it when you can. The Ultra Black sealant just a temp repair (short duration). I used mine like that for about 1 month with no problems.

OK so I finally had a chance today to take it out today. I have not replaced or sealed the rubber part. My new issue is there is no thrust. I put it in forward and barley moves give it little or all the way throttle and it has no jump. The throttle can be high but the power is lacking. What could this be lack of air intake the seal? I replaced the pump oil at the beginning of the season and put a new anti rattle cone on. It seems way louder then before. The water from the little pee hole in the back of the boat barely runs. But, when I give gas while in forward it shoots out like it normally would with no issues but lacking the power behind it.

Any ideas what else I could do to avoid the big hourly maintenance fees.
