Firstly - I want to thank all of the people on here who freely share their expertise for the world to see. I’ve implemented lots of fixes (carb issues, fuel gauge sender, etc) by googling my problem and ending up here. Thank you.

I took this new-to-me 1997 GTX 787 out for its maiden voyage yesterday and I noticed a ticking noise that I don’t have on my 1998 GTX LTD 951. I’m interested is what the community thinks it is and if it’s normal or not.

Again, appreciate all of you!

Kind of hard to tell in the short video but I would start by checking to make sure all engine mount and exhaust bolts are tight.

I did notice the tuned pipe had a leak at the pipe clamp going into the exhaust system. It’s definitely on my to-do list to remove the pipe and properly RTV it back in place. I guess I feared this was more of an internal issue that you might read about on here like “piston slap” or “ring slap” or something. What do you think? Would a minute or longer video help?

I would check all bolts first. When I first got the wife's GTX a lot of bolts were loose. Also check the bildge and under the engine for debris, I found old nuts, bolts, and old spark plugs.

I've got 2 of those in my challenger 1800 and they are both nosier than that, especially when out of water. I've come to the opinion that if the engine is running, I'm good to go.

Hi, if I had to pick it I would say it’s your rotary valve timing wheel flapping about (shim noise).
Just clean up the faces on the next rebuild.
If it were something broken it wouldn’t run (for long). Mine also made a similar noise before I did a top and bottom end rebuild, (not for that reason) which went away when I cleaned up the mating surfaces for the rotary valve and reburred it all.
