just a quick thought> Im a newbie to the seadoo's. I recently baught a Challenger 1800 twin. As I was cleaning under the hood I had a thought about air intake system. Has anyone built an air intake system that brings in fresh air or even takes the intake up higher in the bilge area? My friend had one that took on water and the intake sucked water into the motors. If we built a custom airbox couldn't we keep this from happening?

well thats a given!!
im a car guy and i know that cooler, fresher air makes an engine more efficient. And i know my buddy wasnt the first nor will he be the last to have an engine compartment take on water.

If the engine compartment takes on enough water to stall the engines, your gonna have more problems than just water...you'll be looking for a diver to retrieve your jet boat from the bottom. :ack:

i see what your saying!

im a car guy as well! .... i wouldnt want to suck in any moisture, water, dirt... what ever is close to the bottom of the boat! esp heat! i have a challenger 180 and i cut up the air box and moved it closer to a vent on the side of the boat! it doest get any outside water or any thing like that, but at least i know it isnt taking on the super hot air from inside the engine comp! im sure thats all accounted for by BRP but either way it makes me sleep better at night! lol... so i would do it!

do you have any pics of your mod?
I was thinkin of something similar. Just moving the intake higher and closer to the vents.
I agree with not wanting to suck air straight in and capturing dust or any water in the air while running.

air box

:cheers:no sorry man, i didnt take any pics! you really cant tell that i changed it! it still looks the same but i have cut the whole side off the black box to pull in more air and then i opened up the plastic air vent on the side of the boat! just to make it a little easier to get some fresh air from the out side of the boat!

Here is a pic with custom Intakes, external intercoolers, oversized superchargers etc etc

These intakes make a big difference in performance...

Your actually much better off to be able to breath in warmer air. When the air is cold, this will tell the engine managment system to run a bit rich till the engine warms up. Colder air doesn't atomize fuel as well, unless of course you have fuel injection.

Some may remember in the older model trucks, there was a pull choke on the left of the steering wheel. There was also a flap on the breather that worked with your heat riser on your exhaust manifold so the carbs would have warmer air. Then, as the motor heated up, the spring would relax and open the flap for the air breather to draw in outside air.

correct!

your absolutely correct with the warmer air! its the same concept with my big block i just put in my camaro! but since the 4tec is fuel injected i dont think that should matter too too much! but thats just a guess. i think that set up you have with the intercoolers looks realllllly good! id like to do something like that to mine but i can only put so much money into one of my toys at a time! lol.... and my camaro def takes the cake right now! lol, but i still am getting ready to do the rivia washer kit soon so i will have a safe boat this summer!
