agree with howie,,, the buzzer does help with the process of elimination,, I have several of the RS buzzers at my house, bought a bunch during their $1.99 closeout, but you can buy them dirt cheap on ebay if you want to avoid driving to a local store, find a seller within close mailing range and it will probably show up in 3 days.
as far as searching for electrical shorts, i'm not much of a wrencher and 717's don't come into my house very often.. But when I had something similar to this on my old yamaha xl760 I just started it on the trailer then started wriggling wires & connections until it shut off, bingo ! (of course I didn't have that brain fart until I had spent 45 minutes with a volt meter poking around for no reason)
one last thing, its not recommended to head out on the water and repeat this process over and over since there is a chance that its an engine related issue so you don't want to damage the engine, I doubt its a heat seize based on your description but I'm not willing to eliminate it as a possibility.
