The ski seems to go at wake speed no problem,
as soon as I give it throttle it goes on plane no problem and
then will just die after 30 secs or so. It will start right up and again
die after getting on plane.

Please, what are your thoughts

Gary

Are the electronics resetting? (power off, and back on, with beeps?)

Does is sputter out, and die... or is it running good, and feel like you pulled the lanyard??

Are the electronics resetting? (power off, and back on, with beeps?)--not sure it is powering off then back on (all I have is a speedometer gauge) and there are no beeps--I can just hit the start button without resetting the lanyard

Does is sputter out, and die... or is it running good, and feel like you pulled the lanyard?? it feels like the lanyard was pulled

thanks again

I assume it idles for more than 30 seconds , so this only happens on plane ?

my first thought is electrical... like maybe a loose ground wire ?

correct, seems to only happen when on plane

what is the best way to check for a loose ground wire and how many different points are there---sorry if this seems like a stupid question

You might want to replace the buzzer/beeper on the ski first. You should hear 2 beeps when you attach the lanyard telling you are good to go. Cause if you keep on hearing the 2 beeps on and off could be a bad DESS post or lanyard, but it makes it hard to tell with out the buzzer working. The main ground is from the engine block to the battery. You can usually see both ends of the cable to check it. You can get a replacement buzzer from Radio Shack and use ti save you some cash.

agree with howie,,, the buzzer does help with the process of elimination,, I have several of the RS buzzers at my house, bought a bunch during their $1.99 closeout, but you can buy them dirt cheap on ebay if you want to avoid driving to a local store, find a seller within close mailing range and it will probably show up in 3 days.

as far as searching for electrical shorts, i'm not much of a wrencher and 717's don't come into my house very often.. But when I had something similar to this on my old yamaha xl760 I just started it on the trailer then started wriggling wires & connections until it shut off, bingo ! (of course I didn't have that brain fart until I had spent 45 minutes with a volt meter poking around for no reason)

one last thing, its not recommended to head out on the water and repeat this process over and over since there is a chance that its an engine related issue so you don't want to damage the engine, I doubt its a heat seize based on your description but I'm not willing to eliminate it as a possibility.

The ski does have a working buzzer and I do not hear it going on and off.
I will go over the ground wires, if that seems ok I am not sure what to do next

Again could it possibly be the carb or dess post?

Next time it happens, pull the plugs and see what they look like. Chasing a problem like this could leave you stranded on the water. Stay close to the dock or have a tow buddy.

If the buzzer works you will hear it when you attach you lanyard. You will hear 2 beeps and you start it up. If you don't hear anything the buzzer is bad or unplugged. I would look over your fuel system first since it happens always doing the same thing I would lean more on fuel than the DESS. The DESS would just happen at different times more than just always getting on the plane.

Brand new NGK BR8ES plugs--I will pull them the next time I'm at the ski
Got Stranded--not too far from shore

I will most likely replace all filters, replace the water/gas filter, replace the gas reserve valve, and have the carb rebuilt--any recommendations for carb rebuilding? and hope for the best next spring

Also look for any loose ground wires

Use all Mikuni parts for the carb. OSD sells kits for them. You have the accel. pump also so just replace it all.
