carb rebild and pop pressure questions

I have a 97 gtx. I had some issues last summer with poor performance so I decided to take the carbs off and check them out. I tried to test the pop off pressure and neither carb will hold any pressure what so ever. Are the gaskets and o rings causing the carbs to not hold any pressure? should I rebuild them? Thanks for any help in advance.

If its been awhile since they where rebuilt then I would rebuild them. Its not hard. There's info, pics and how too's on this site. I did it last summer. If you buy a rebuild kit(40$ per carb) then it will come with the O-rings, gasket, filter and springs. Just be sure to use the same tension spring as the original. Plus its a good idea to clean all the gunk out with carb cleaner. I would also recommend upgrading the fuel line from the original SeaDoo line.

Good luck

thanks. The carbs actually look really clean. all the jets and the needle and seat looked good but neither would hold pressure. I was trying to test it because the people that owned it before me were some hack mechanics and really butchered some things up. Would anyone happen to know the pop off specs for the 97 gtx?

If it has the 787 engine, which I am sure it does, the range is around 28 to 36 psi I think. I set mine on my xp to 27 after getting advice from here and looking around. (my xp has the 787 also)

Make sure you wet the needle with some wd40 before testing, if it is dry it won't seal. I suggest getting a manual though. Becoming a premium member will get you access to them or you can find them on eBay, etc.

Hope that helps.

Dumb question but you are blocking off the other nipples right?

Put a bunch of WD40 in the seat area and see if you see bubbles...that will tell you if its the oring. Same goes with the needle...you'll see bubbles come up from there if they arent sealing.

Thanks guys. I plugged all the nipples when testing but didn't put anything like wd-40 on the needle. I found a manual online and it said to do the same thing so i will try that. Is there anyway to know the size of the needle and seat and the weight on the spring? I ask because I can't be sure the people before me didn't try to change anything.

Just to throw in my 2 cents....

I don't like wd-40. It can damage a rubber tipped needle. I use 3-n-1 oil. (any light machine oil, in a drip container will work) Obviously on a new needle, and the limited exposure doesn't cause issues... but on old needles, it could.

I guess it's not a big deal... I just wanted to throw in my opinion.

Yeah I think there is a carb thread if you search for "surging" or something like that and it explains colors of the spring. But Doc was a good help when I had these questions so he may be able to add to that.

Now for the needle size, I am not sure on that. Maybe look for a stamp on the housing of the needle like a jet would have? I think based on what I have learned, spring tension does not matter as long as your pop off pressure is set correctly.

97 GTX with the 800 engine should be a 1.5 needle/seat set to 23-43 PSI pop-off. (I would try to be around 28-30 myself) The 800's seem to run the best at the bottom end of the spec.

Thanks for all the help guys. Before I spend $100 bucks on the rebuild kits, could anyone confirm I should rebuild due to the fact that neither carb is holding any pressure at all?

you should be able to hold the n&s closed. If that doesnt work I'd guess it was your tester.

Also the rebuild kits do not come with needles and seats.

Knowing all the mistakes I made when I started using the gauge...I would be trying everything before I threw parts at them. Its always good to rebuild them for piece of mind at the very least.

Seadoo source has the carb kit you need. I believe you get genuine mikuni parts and newer cap screws. Everything you need including needles and seats. For 99.95 its a good deal.

Its a great deal...but he does not use OEM parts. I used about 6 and didnt have any issues, but I just cant take any chances on customers machines.

The allen screws in their kit kick total asz though!!

They say they use oem parts and I like the fact they include the filters, a the non oem aftermarket eBay 40 dollar kits don't have the filters but the pictures show that they include more necessary gaskets than the seadoo source does. I'm trying to decide what to buy as well

well so looking at his pictures of the kits, as compared to some of the aftermarket kits ive seen on ebay, the ebay kits contain more gaskets than his kits do. Its nice he includes the filters and base gaskets, but the base gaskets are cheap and the filters can be cleaned people say. As far as the other gaskets, the ebay kits show 5 or 6 large gaskets including the more expensive ones, his kits only show 1 or 2 large ones. Im trying to figure out what the best kits are to buy for the money. I wonder if seadoo sells the rebuild kits and how much they charge, probably a ton!

any help would be awesome

You could also get your kits from shopsbt.com. That is where I got mine, about $45 a carb I think, they come with filters, gaskets, fuel pump pieces, diaphragms and extra springs and levers. I personally would just replace the filter if it is clogged. Not worth the hassle to clean it (just my opinion)

Only bad thing is they don't come with needle seats, but they sell them separate for a fair price.

I'm sure it's not oem though, I will see how mine pans out.
