Carb Cleaning

How difficult is it to clean the carbs? I'm getting a slight 2 - 3 second hesitation from idle when going full throttle. I already changed the plugs so I'm guessing the carb may need a cleaning but I wasn't sure how difficult it is. I do have the shop manual but I'm still not too clear on the difficulty. Is there a screen or something I need to clean out? I'm a newbie to ski's.....

take you 15min, get that carb/s out. Remove the black airbox, and that'll expose the carb. Then remove the choke cable/trhottle cable, and injection cable, label your fuel lines at carb, then remove the 2-big allen bolts. Carb will pop right out. Then dismantle it, 1 side at time.

Okay I've got the black box off and the stuff above the carb. I have the manual but I can't figure out how to disconnect the two cables attached to it. Where should I be disconnecting at? The fuel lines are easy enough and I see the two big bolts. I just can't figure the damn cables out. Any help is appreciated! Thanks. This is my first time working on a jetski so pardon my stupidity.

Take the plate that the cables are attached to off the end of the carbs and then you can move the cable around and slip them off the throttle lever.

So when you say plate do you mean the screws at the ends where the spring things are located or that plate near the front bottom of the carb in the pic? Looks like two screws holding that plate? Thanks

Cables

Fisst take the nut off on the front side of the cable, a 10mm wrench will work.
the cables will then slide out of a slot.. The choke cable is held in with a small metric allen screw (it's in the side of the brass piece), sorry I don't remember the size.. Once the throttle cable is lose take it off the cam, at the far side there is a barrel end on the cable.. To get the cable out just push it out of the slot with your finger, I think toward the front of the ski..

The plate at the bottom of the pic. Two screws hold it to the side of the carb. Take this off and then the cable, with the plate still attached to the cable not the carb, can be moved in such a way to slide the end of the cable off of the throttle lever. These two screws are 2 of 4 that hold the side panel on the carb. Since you are taking it apart anyway this is not a problem. If you do it this way and reinstall it in a similar fashion, none of your linkage adjustments will be affected.

You can do it the way roneagan states, but if you do it that way, I would put some silicone or something on the pinch nut behind the plate so that your adjustments are not altered.

Great. Thanks for the clarification. I will try tonight and keep you guys posted. I don't want to affect any adjustments on the cable so I'll try it without messing with the adjustment nuts for now. Thanks for all the replies.

Okay got it off and got the carb filter out. About half of it has black stuff in it. How do I get it out? Should i just buy a replacement? How much do they run for that tiny ass filter? lol. I tried the compressed air and it didn't clear it out. Thanks guys for the help.

Try putting it in a glass with warm soapy water and let it soak. Then swish it around in the soapy water. Carefully use a q-tip to clean. If you can't get it looking like new, replace it. I am not sure how much they cost.

Filter is $13 so I'm buying one for piece of mind. Now is all I have to do is put this crap back together and not have extra bolts laying around! lol.. I'm crossing my fingers but I think I can do it!

I am having a problem with crap getting into the carbs and I'm tired of paying $300 to the dealer to clean them out.
Is the procedure any different than you described to sledge?

GKW - It should be the same setup as he descibed with mine. One carb to deal with and after he described removing the cables I had it out of the engine bay in 5 minutes. It's pretty easy to do once you start going on it. Of course the first time takes longer because you want to be sure you're doing in right such as in my case. Saved me atleast $200 in labor and only cost me $14 for the brand new filter. I should be able to put back together in under 30 minutes.

Yes. According to the parts finder, that model has a single carb with the same plate (bracket).
