I am the new owner of a 1997 GTX. I'm wanting to check the compression. Everywhere in the owner's and shop manuals that it talks about cranking the engine with the spark plugs out (whether it is for checking compression or fogging the engine or forcing water out of a flooded engine), it makes it VERY clear that you must ground the spark plug wires to the "grounding device" first. It is my understanding that this is done to protect the ignition coil.
I am very leery of cranking the engine without grounding the spark plug wires, based on everything I've read (not to mention that if they're just floating around in there, I might find my hand being the path to ground from one of the cables!).
But, I can't find the "grounding device" anywhere. The picture in the shop manual appears to be for a 717 engine, not the 787 engine that is in the GTX. I've looked all over, even places that the spark plug wires couldn't reach, and I have not been able to find any posts which look like they could be ground posts for the spark plug wires.
What am I missing here? Does the 1997 787 Rotax engine have grounding posts for the spark plug wires? If not, how do I safely crank the engine with the spark plugs out?
Thanks,
Mike
