Can't find spark plug wire "grounding device" on '97 GTX

I am the new owner of a 1997 GTX. I'm wanting to check the compression. Everywhere in the owner's and shop manuals that it talks about cranking the engine with the spark plugs out (whether it is for checking compression or fogging the engine or forcing water out of a flooded engine), it makes it VERY clear that you must ground the spark plug wires to the "grounding device" first. It is my understanding that this is done to protect the ignition coil.

I am very leery of cranking the engine without grounding the spark plug wires, based on everything I've read (not to mention that if they're just floating around in there, I might find my hand being the path to ground from one of the cables!).

But, I can't find the "grounding device" anywhere. The picture in the shop manual appears to be for a 717 engine, not the 787 engine that is in the GTX. I've looked all over, even places that the spark plug wires couldn't reach, and I have not been able to find any posts which look like they could be ground posts for the spark plug wires.

What am I missing here? Does the 1997 787 Rotax engine have grounding posts for the spark plug wires? If not, how do I safely crank the engine with the spark plugs out?

Thanks,
Mike

If your engine is not set up like this picture, then ground them your self directly to the engine Block. You can put a bolt that fits into the wire ends properly then get the bolts to securely sit on clean metal of the block or some sort of alligator clips for example.

Thank you, Coastiejoe! I had been looking all over the engine block and near it. I never looked in the (now) obvious place. My service manual doesn't show the picture you included. That picture does look like it is from a manual. Where did you get it?

Thanks again.

From the manual. Took a picture of it via my phone. I searched for GROUNDING by hitting Cntrl F. Came right up for me.

You are welcome,,

That's embarrassing. I did the same thing (searching the .pdf manual for "grounding"), but only in the service manual. For searching the operator's manual, I just looked at my printed copy, which is not the same as the .pdf version! The printed copy of the operator's manual that I have doesn't show the picture. But now that I search the .pdf version, there it is -- just like you said. Doh!

Thanks.

Mike
