Okay first off i am new here seems like a pretty good forum..

Anyways I am buying 2 97 xp One has a brand new motor (Not broken in yet)

I have a few questions i will start with the one that has the new motor..

How should i break this thing in? I want to do the best i can to make sure everything is going to work.. I know the guy has started it a few times doing nothing special is that a big deal?

When he started the one with the new motor there was a bit of white smoke? I am used to 2 stroke motor smoking and it was not much more then that buy the guy said that is not normal for them to do? Could this be a big problem?

On the other ski He said something about There is a oil light that stays on all the time? he said they have never had a problem with it? Is this going to be a big deal to get fixed? Or could it be pointing at another bigger problem?

Both ski's are in very nice shape the PO Told me they had some fiberglass work done about 3 years ago when there kids ran in to each other (You cant even tell where it was)

And they are on a really nice clean trailer stained wood, bike rack and a tool box on the front..

We pretty much have a done deal but i will be going to the lake friday to test ride them..

What should i look for?

And even though the one with a new motor is not broken in should i ride it like normal?

Any help would be great thanks guy!

For the first 10 hours, it is recommended that you run a little oil mixed into the gas, I think 40:1 ratio (someone chime in if ratio is wrong).

Also, keep it under 70% power for the first 10 hours, with only a few couple second burst up to 90% or so.

After 10 hours, it should be ready to rock!

While riding both machines, pay attention to how quickly they accellerate from a standstill when you gun them. They should pretty much jump out of the hole. If they feel like they are "peeling out" then you may have a wear ring or two to replace. Not a huge job, but about $100-200 in parts if you do it yourself, or maybe $600 total if you pay the shop to do it.

Well i am hoping to learn to work on them my self... but i really have no clue about them...

Coming from dirtbikes and cars the water thing is kinda new to me...

Do you have any clue about the oil light thing? That is my biggest concern just because i am ignorant and don't know what all that could mean..

Could be wiring, faulty oil level pickup, lots of things. If the oil system fails, it will only run a few seconds before seizing the engine, so if it has been on for a long time, and engine still runs, it should be minor.

I would still want to track down the problem and fix the light in case you ever DO actually get low on oil.

He said he has ran it like that for a long time so i figured its not a huge deal...

But i agree 100% With you and dont want to have any chance of the oil system failing and want to get it fixed..

So pretty much if it does fine on the test ride its nothing to be really worried about but its something that should be fixed?

It is always good to do a compression check. I would say "yeah, if it runs fine on test drive you should be ok" but there is never a guarantee.

For example i drove from houston to florida and except for some wear ring slippage boat ran fine. Drug it home and it started to melt rave valves and then 6th trip out it threw a rod.

So it is really hard to say for sure.

Lol i understand man. Thanks for taking the time to help me out..

One last question he is running some oil its like GSX? Or something like that its 50 a gal. and you have to buy it from sea doo? Is there something cheaper i can run ? Or should i just use that stuff?

Xps? You should stick with whatever oil he is using. You can switch to cheaper stuff if it is approved for use in your engine but it is recommended that you drain your system first. If you use the wrong oil things can gum up or worse just clog your oiling system (i did that too!)

Yeah that is the stuff i figured i should but had to ask $50 is steep but i guess its the price you pay to play lol

Really nice looking setup and clean skis! You may want to invest in a premium membership and download tbe user manuals and repair manuals. They will help tremendously in the future when things break or performance drops. Might save you lots of money in labor charges too.

They also outline specifics of acceptable oils. There are oils out there in the 20 buck range but you need to be sure they fit all the specifications.

Yeah i thought so too! have all the little stuff with them too tool kit fire extinguisher and everything.. They have some scuff marks but not worried about that at all.. They were a bit higher then i was looking to spend (My budget was 3k And i was looking at ski's that i would have to work on to get them going..) But its well worth 3800 for me to get some in this good of shape and i like the looks of the 97+ Way more anyways And the trailer was a big + Too its super nice.. I may end up investing in that in the up coming weeks will see how everything works out at the lake first

Be sure to ask what happened to the last motor. Sometimes there are other problems that lead to engine failure and slapping in a new engine may not fix what caused the first one to go. If it went lean or lost oil, a new engine will do the same thing and quickly fail again.

He said it started running slower.. then bogging really bad and the next time they went out it blew the motor
