Burnt magneto connector

I purchased a 1996 Challenger at an auction that is not running. There is no spark so I traced the wiring where I could. I found a burnt connector that should be plugged into the magneto. There are 4 yellow/green wires and two black wires. I can see them on the wiring diagram, and they should be connected to the magneto cover at the front of the engine. When I look at the cover where the other half of the connector should be there is nothing. I tried feeling around inside the hole I can't feel anything in there, so that side of the connector seems to be missing. Do I have to take the engine out to replace whatever needs replacing in there or can I get to it with the engine in the boat?

Thank you,

Steve

Steve, the engine does not have to come out but needs to be loose from the mounts. You will need to pull the pump and driveshaft then unbolt the engine at the top of the mounts to keep your alignment. You will also need to disconnect the tuned pipe from the waterbox.

Now you can rotate and lift the engine in the bay to remove the magneto cover. That connector is attached to the stator and trigger. Be prepared to replace it.

Burnt magneto

Thanks, I'm bidding on one on Ebay. When I opened the cover I found it missing, so the previous owner took it out then closed the cover.
