Morning guys, I was hoping to fire up the XP yesterday after the winter rebuild but was bit by the electronics gremlins. The 5 amp fuse blows immediately once I hit the start button. The starter engages and turns for a brief second then the fuse blows. Based on my research it sounds like the electronic module (95 XP 720 non-dess w. grey box) may be fried. I did the following troubleshooting:

Disconnected VTS
Ohmed the start/stop bottom
Ohmed the safety switch
Ohmed the stator
Pulled the yellow, yellow/red, red wires from the rectifier
Disconnect the various harness connectors

Ran out of fuses, low on beer and called it a day. Did I miss anything before I drop another $100+? I am considering an aftermarket module from Bay Area for $119 w. 30 day warranty. http://www.ebay.com/itm/201152558117?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
Any input appreciated. Thanks.

make sure your stator is not grounded, do the ohms check on your mpem, jump the solenoid to make sure it turns over like it should.

If you do find out that the MPEM is definitly shot, you should try melting off or dissolving off the black packing compound and look for the diode that is associated with that 5 amp fuse as that is the only problem with that mpem most likely, do this only if you have nothing to do as it might be a waste of time lol but Ill bet that mpem could be easily repaired. there are a few threads on mpem repair but can be a bit hard to find. If I was in the US I would buy that broken mpem from you for a few bucks and id try and fix it but shipping to canada again would hurt too much :(

I saw the many post about replacing the diode. I may dig into it later this week. Thanks for the info.

Yep, got one of that number complete with key, key post, wiring, box, MPEM, rectifier etc. Minty

Going to check my other 3 non DESS mpems now
