ball post RFID DESS not working?

Hi all,
2016 GTI 130. Yesterday the screen said "reading key..." for a while and then finally started. Stalled out a few times, as what would happen if the key pulled off. Eventually stopped starting and acting as if there was no key inserted at all on the ball post RFID DESS. It stopped even saying "reading key..". Then randomly got it to start for a few seconds later that day. I tried my other key, same thing.

Sounds like the DESS reader needs to be replaced? Any ideas? Is this common issue?

Update: I took apart the DESS module and found this little chip fried/corroded. It is the tiny board that goes up inside the DESS ball (the sensor I guess). Anyone know where i can get a replacement board? it is just the tiny little standoff board, see pic
