Anyone want 3 degree trim tabs for X4 hull?

Dr. Honda will make some 3 degree trim tabs for us if we come up w/ 5 or 6 people that will agree to buy them. These are the best handling parts you can put on your X4.

Not to crap on your thread, but if you jump wake you do not want these. They are absolutely needed in race applications and work great to keep it from bouncing. Were putting a set on my buddie's "top heavy" GFs ski...lol

The best ones ever made were the Oddessey tabs with the skegs on them. They were a happy medium. They were made out of plastic though and I had one rip off. I've been looking for a set for 6 years with no luck.

Tony you want to make them?? I think I still have the one good one.

Sure... if you want to send it/them to me, to take measurements from... it will make my life easy.

I've been talking with Skoolball and I told him that a couple years ago there was mixed feelings on the tabs... so they were put on the back burner. But, since spring is on us... I'm getting busy... so this project's speed will depend on how many people want them. If we get 20 guys say... "I WANT THEM!!!!" then they will take priority in my shop. if 5 guys want them... I'll work on them when I get a hole.

Just an FYI... in my shop:

1) 3 sets of Carbs
2) Inventory on my motorcycle parts
3) Prototype for a trunion. (RC parts for a dealer)
4) Prototype for a steering tiller (another RC dealer)
5) A speedster with 2 bad engines. AND, he also wants a 2nd battery in stalled, fix the fuel gauge, and bilge pump.
6) Suzuki DRZ head machined for manual decompression.

Unfortunately... my own inventory is getting put at the bottom of the list, even though I have open orders. The carbs need done at the beginning of next week. The head is getting done today. And I have the boat at my house so I can work on it this weekend.

So... even if everyone wants them... I'm about 3 weeks out on starting again. (not trying to be harsh... just want to put that out there)

If this subject was brought up 2 months ago (when it was cold) I would have worked on it, just to keep me busy.

Way off topic here, buy why the manual decomp? Installing a kick starter? I had an old yz400f with manual decompression and hated the thing! It took me weeks to learn how to start the thing correctly, even then I would have to hold my breath right.

Back on topic, this may be something I am interested in, or the style that minne is talking about. My local lake can be choppy as hell, but not all the time. There are days that a stock X-4 or almost any ski is useless, but others the water is relatively smooth. I need a healthy medium, I'm going to start first with an intake grate though.

Subscribed, I need to get some seat time with my new ski to know what it needs, but this is on my considering list.

I like manual decomp better, starts quicker.

Need a price estimate, but would definelty consider a set. My normal lake is choppy as hell once all the boaters get on the water!

Ill let Tony chime in, but I am sure the price depends on how many sets we buy.

Warner Robins, about a 100 miles from you! Normally ride on Lake Tobosofkee or Sinclair. Saw you have a nice lake by LaGrange!

can u guys tell me what 3deg trim tabs are/do?are they different from my beach house sponsons? we only play ride, occasional boat wake jumping.

Yes they are different.
Think about a boats's trim tabs. They help to plane/keep nose down thus keeping you from porposing

so,these go at the bottom of the hull at the back,n stick out the back,,not where the sponsons are

yep! im in! i have a set of r&d on my 96,but if u guys make them,i need a set for my 95xp,,so,count me in for 1 set for sure, thnx for the info

As chucked said... it actually is easier to start.

Here's the deal... all of the DRZ's have a de-compression. But... all the electric start versions have a centrifugal weight on the exhaust cam. So... as it starts to spin... it lifts, and fires the engine. It sounds great... right?? Well... the weights have a cross pin that has a tendency of coming out, if you start to spin the engine faster... and KaBoom. So... people building race engines, take them off. Also, aftermarket cams don't have the place for the weights. So... couple that with a big bore, and higher compression... and the poor electric starter can't spin it over.

Now... the problem is... on the S/SM/DS engines... they didn't machine the heads to even put the de-comp parts in. So... when I did my DRZ SuMo build... I decided to make the fixtures, and offer head machining service.

OK........

Ball park price........

Well... right now... a good guess would be $100. But until I figure out my material costs, and machine time... it's hard to say.

Now... as Minitonka was saying... if you like to jump surf... you will rip them off. (landing tail first) But... big tabs, at about 3 degrees makes a HUGE difference in how it handles. My XP went from bouncing at anything over 2/3rds throttle, and couldn't break 45 mph. But, once I shimmed the big plates I have on the back of it... I can hold it wide open, with the VTS centered... and it's pushing over 55.

Thanks. Would they be fairly easy to take on & off based on what type of riding you were planning, or would the install be semi-permanent? How are they mounted?

Interesting story about the DRZ. I've got a DR650, does it have the exhaust cam weight as well?

Ahh I see, well that makes sense then. I have never heard of that problem before, I know a lot of people use the DRZ head and cams on LTZ quads. Oddly enough after looking at your pictures, you cleared something else up for me, I have a DRZ head in my garage lol. I bought two LTZ heads from a guy a few months ago, well apparently one was from a DRZ. I was wondering why the hell it had a hole for manual decompression. It dropped two valves and damaged the chamber and valve seats. Do you do any other head work services?

Also how do you like your supermoto? I thought it would be cool to turn my 400f into one, if it had been a WR I probably wold have. My wife does not want me on the road though, she says I'm dangerous enough off :p

Well... normally, you would put them on with some RTV to seal them up. So, they aren't easy to take on and off. But... it's possible.

The DR650 is straight out of the 70's. (it's an old design) There is actually a mechanical decompression on that engine, and it's hooked to the kick start. Plus, since it's an air cooled engine... you aren't spinning it to fast.

Sorry... no... I don't do any other head work for that engine. There are a few other shops that can. If you need to know the names, I can PM them to you.

If you want to block off the de-comp hole... I made some plugs. FYI... if the hole is there... that's the "K" head. (The best one) That head came from the Dirt-only, Kick-start head. (best stock flow)

My SuMo Build was GREAT. The factory DRZ SuMo is just OK. They basically built it to be a street bike, and not a true SuMo. So... I took a beat up DS, did a rebuild... put on the 50mm conventional forks from a "K", and a WP rear shock... put in a new crank, and big bore (making it a 467 engine) With K cams, and an FCR carb. (the stock vacuum carb sucks too)

Sorry for the off topic... but here's the before and after.....

Put me down for a set, it's something I'd like to have. I really don't yet know how much jumping I will be doing, but I did notice on my last run that the only time I could go WOT was on the smooth parts of the lake. My vote would be for a medium trim that might hold up to a little jumping.

Thanks Doc for the info on the DR. Just got it last year and am having a blast with it. Going to the Hootch in north GA in June! Very nice job BTW on the supermoto. Bet that's also fun to ride!

That thing is sick! awesome job on the build, and thanks for passing on the info about the head! Oh and yes, if you don't care shoot me a PM with those shops, I have a few 450r race heads that need a little work too.
