any idea what caused this ???

working on a project ski I bought, 95 xp with a 717 couldnt get it to run so I started to tear it down after running a compression check 60 and 90 lbs.....ouch then i went a little further after i noticed the rotary valve plate not turning and this is what i found.......the brass gear was chewed up so my question is what could cause this?

Something (most likely a needle bearing from a con-rod) got caught in the rotary valve and stopped it, stripping that gear. Make sure you check that shaft as it's most likely bent and can't be reused.
