Another supercharger washer question

Just got a 2005 C180 SCIC, 57 hours, and am changing out the supercharger washers. Shows no signs of issues, but I'm just gonna do it.

I was just about to pull the trigger on the Riva washers, but see stuff on eBay from 45 bucks to 69 bucks. I know these are CNC'd from tool steel, hardened, etc, and that ain't cheap. My question is, has anyone used those cheaper washers in eBay with any success? Looks like a couple different domestic machine shops jumped on board making them, and it's not like it's China junk or something.

Just curious the thoughts. I tried searching but didn't see anything. Apologies if this horse has been beaten before!

If it's domestic tool steel... buy them.

I was going to make them at my shop, but I couldn't find someone to do the surface grinding at a reasonable price.

The second house is the same outfit that makes the flimsy tool kit (which they now say has been improved). They even offer the tool kit with the washers as a combo:

I asked both vendors about their washers - if they are domestic tool steel, surface ground to what dimensions, hardened to what, etc. We will see if they respond.

Any thoughts?

As I recall from last Fall when I was looking for steel washers for my RXT (including on Ebay), the Ebay listings for under $60 weren't actually steel washers they were original ceramic washers. The only steel supercharger washers on Ebay were the ~$69 ones. I bought the washers with "improved" tool kit... the tools are still weak, mainly the shaft holding tool it's forks bend and let the shaft come loose when you're trying to get the nut off the end of the shaft! If I had to do it again, I'd buy better tools (there are better ones that aren't gold colored on Ebay!) and washers seperately.

Thanks for the feedback. So the 69 buckers were steel, those were the ones you got, right? I guess if you have 'em in your ski, they must have been ok then?

I did end up ordering the tools from the machine house in Indy. Those are the 3-pc set that have the big supercharger holding bracket, the shaft tool (very beefy), and the 360-degree wrench for holding the gear. The wrench looks like a boxed end wrench. All are black powder coated, and I have been reading that people like them.

So it comes down to the 69 dollar washers or the proven Riva ones.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

I only have about 1 hour on my RXT since changing the ceramic washers out late last Fall... took the hose off the SC today and tried to turn the air impeller by fingers, and could just barely move it. So so far so good. IDK. In another 30 hours my SC will be ready for it's 100 hr complete rebuild and of course that'll include yet another set of steel washers then... will see what rebuild kit is working best for people when I get closer to that point in another year or two.

Whatever washers you go with today, just remember you'll be changing them again when you reach your 100 hr rebuild interval on that thing.

You know, that is a great point you make - At the 100hr rebuild I'll be putting other washers in there. The boat has 57 hours on it now, so I think I am going to try the 69 dollar ones, mic them, and at 100 hours, mic them again when they come back out. We'll see how they hold up over the next 43 hours, and go from there.

I do know when I took the boat out today (first time for me since the test ride), I was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. She ran strong all day, though, 7800 to 8000rpm at will. But that was the last ride for the ol' ceramics.

Interestingly, the shop with the 45 dollar ones on eBay emailed me back and said they are American sourced tool steel, but couldn't tell me the specs. Said they are machined as good or better than OEM specs.
 
Ended up buying the 69 dollar ones from the place in Maryland. Will be putting them in late this week/early next week and will post up the results.
 
Get this tool and grind the end down like shown in attached pic. I'm told this greatly aids in removing the 1 very hard to get to SC bolt!

The grinding option is the way to go. Start with a good product and make it better for our application...
