So it appears that many ride their xp's withougt the air intake whatever thing that is under the rear of the seat. Or thats what it appears from teh pics I see.

thoughts on it being beneficial or not

i've always questioned it myself, i've ridden w/o but i think a rider or two at some point told me that there was a valid reason for it, (pushing gas fumes up from bottom of the hull?) i think it maybe redirects water somehow as well. mine has one now and i'll leave it in, but i've had many days where I took it out and set it in a corner while charging the battery, forgot about it and rode for 2-3 weeks before realizing it was sitting on the corner of the workbench.

The fumes issue would make sense. If I remember correctly there are vents on the rear of the seat which I think connect to that tube. So when you ride the air passing the rear should cause a sort of suction out the rear.

Or that its a possibiility

It's to help remove the fumes from the bottom of the bilge.

When riding... the air is pushed into the vents by your legs. That air goes in the seat, and down that tube. At speed... it also creates a positive pressure in the hull.

Then... whatever the engine doesn't use... the bilge fumes are drawn out by the 2 corrugated hoses that are connected up close to the hing of the hood. Basically... the air going over the hood creates a vacuum, and draws the fumes out.

Can you ride without the tube??? Sure you can. BUT... it's not really giving you any benefits as far as weight savings. AND... without it... you aren't going to push the fresh air down into the bilge, where the intake of the air box is.

So... without it... you could get a "Gas Lair" with heavy fumes on the bottom, and fresh air on top. (and poor performance)

It keeps it from sinking if it flips upside down. I found out the hard way with my '95

seriously ? i gotta hear details on this !

Went right under, the only thing keeping it floating was the floatation, which wasnt alot. Luckily I was only a few feet from shore. After much thought I realized thats why that baffle tube is so long, to keep the intake higher then the water level.

Thats not what I meant. With the seal around the seat to hull, and seat to vent seal, when the boat is upside down, the lowest part to the water is the bottom of the vent. Its hard to explain without visualizing

PMSL Tim nice gif!

lol.... glad you liked that, its the first thing that popped into my head :)
