Advice on removing broken exhaust valve

I've recently purchased a 1998 speedster (787s). When i bought it i knew it needed some tinkering. I noticed on the test drive that the starboard engine did not rev as high as it should at WOT. I went to clean the exhaust valves and found my problem. The exhaust valve on the cylinder closer to the bow was stuck closed as a result of bad spring. I tried removing it but it will not come out, I think plate is bent in as a result of carbon deposits and pressure from the exhaust.

In attempting to pull the valve out I've managed to break the "stem" off leaving the valve in the engine. Which is just awesome!!

My question is am i going to be getting this out from the top by removing the cylinder head/pistons etc. Or can i get at it by removing the exhaust manifold? It looks like i could get at it from removing the exhaust manifold, but wanted to get your opinions to savemyself some time and headaches.

Many thanks! One other quick question is the exhaust valve the same part for both cylinders? Looking at the microfiche it looks to be the same.

Thanks again!

yes, the rave valves are the same for both cyls.

if the whole stem is broke and there's nothing to grab, you'll have to pull the head and get it that way. you can either push it into the cylinder or try to tap it out the other way. be careful, you don't want to mark up the cyl.

removing the ex manifold won't help, you need to remove the head and put that piston a BDC, you'll have enough room. the head has rubber o-ring seals so it's no big deal to pull it.
