I have a 99 GTX RFI Seadoo. I purchased this PWC a little over a month ago . I recently took it to the lake and had a turn for the worst .I was full throttle down the lake when the PWC cut completely out like someone had pulled the kill switch .. I took the kill switch out then plugged it back in . The Seadoo started and I took off .To make a long story short it cut out again after about 20 seconds .Took it to the Seadoo dealer and they said oil pump failure and that I had a option to either replace the oil pump and hope the engine will last or rebuild .. I got no HI -TEMP light or anything the entire time this episode happened .Im looking for opinions to see if the engine really needs a rebuild or if a oil pump will be sufficent . Engine is for sure NOT seized . I appreciate any help.

Check the raves, look at piston skirts, RV oil lines for leakage (after 3-4 yrs they get brittle).

Well...

I know what the problem is .. the nipple on the oil pump broke .. the question is ..Should I risk just replacing the oil pump or rebuild the motor ... I was told that a motor that runs with no oil for a period of time can throw a rod even after the oil problem is fixed.

TY,
Josh

Replace pump & prime the lines. (hold Oil lever to WOT) while idleing to get bubbles out. Consult the manual as to what that proceedure looks like. I can here from the
back of the shop an engine with a prob. A ROD would really sound bad, wrist pins
sound off early as well. You'll be fine. Bills86e

Im just afraid that after I fire it up it will throw a ROD .. it was idleing kinda rough when took it off the water to get serviced. Ty very much for your quick replys

I also have another question . What would cause the seadoo to cut off if there is no switch that kills the engine when it gets hot or gets no oil?

A seizure occurs, the piston skirts swell out ward and lock against the cylinder walls.
They can revert somewhat when they cool, and move up & down again, sometimes
gougeing on both occurs. If they were really hot, the wrist pin roller bearing retainers fall apart and implosion occures, and Crank or counter balance shaft failure.

Ty again for your help. What im really implying is how can a seizure occur then allow the PWC to be started an ran 3 to 4 times after with out a complete seizure to occur, and if infact this is occuring then I have no option but to rebuild the engine correct? .. or go through with what you said and just replace the oiler and run with it. Again I ty for your quick responces.

And when I say ran again .. I mean for about 20 to 30 secs before it cuts off again .. Still blows my mind that I never got a hi temp light.

Yes it can. But... there will be damage to the pistons regardless if it can be started again.

If it were my ski... I'd pop the jugs off to get a good look at the pistons, and then evaluate the situation. If they are scared, I would do a top end. If they look OK... it would go back together. While it's apart... you can see if the big end bearing (bottom of the con rod) has gotten hot. If it's not discolored, and feels smooth... then reuse it. If not... it's time for an entire engine rebuild.
