99' Challenger Issues

I have a 99' Challenger 1800 with two 787s. I have been having issues ever since I bought it a year ago. When I first bought it I took it in to have it looked at and "tuned" up so to speak. All they did was replace spark plugs and cleaned the carbs a little bit. Had no issues last season after that. This year I have replaced spark plugs several times because they keep fouling. I recently pulled the air filters off cleaned those out replaced the grey fuel lines, replaced the plugs, and sprayed carb cleaner into the carbs with the air filters off. It sounded great on a hose kit and idled fine. When I put it in the water it ran great for about 2 hours both engines reaching 7000 rpm. Suddenly the port side engine just cut off and was hard to get back running. When I did get it to run the engine kept making a clicking noise and would idle back down and cut off. The only way I can think to describe it is it kind of sounded like it was misfiring. I was thinking of taking the carbs completely off and rebuilding them the only thing is I have never done it before. Will dirty cards cause repeated fouling of the plugs? Any suggestions on correcting these issues? Thanks.

You can't just clean the carbs a little bit. They need dismantled and cleaned and put back together. Sounds like you had the little cleaning while you still had the old fuel lines, so they are probably gunked up again. Are you still using the oil injection system?

Yeah I am still using the oil injection system. I have looked into putting a block off plate on and going premix. What's the easiest way to make sure the oil injection system is working properly?

I was just curious if maybe you were premxing and maybe too much oil was the problem. Just make sure it all looks good. Make sure all the lines are in good shape and not broken or leaking. Change the filters if they are more than a couple years old. You can mark the tank and see if the oil goes down.

Thanks. I don't see any problems with the oil lines. When I took the carbs off I could not get into them because the screws were seized up. I tired to spray them with and anti-seize spray to see if they would free but they didn't. I cleaned them as well as I could and put them back on the boat. When I fired up the boat it had the same problem. This time I was able to look directly into the carbs with the air filter off. It would sound like a back fire and I could see a small explosion in the carb. Still not sure what else could be causing this problem.

Ok. So I take the boat to a guy to clean the carbs and when he's finished he puts them back on a runs the motor. The motor is back firing and there is a small expolison in the carb. He tells me the the carbs are not getting any compression readings and he thinks there may be a hole in the pistons. Or it may be somewhere deeper. He said its gunna cost anywhere from 1300 to 2000 dollars to fix depending on where the problem is. Does this sound like something that can happen and cost this much to fix? Just wanted a second opinion.

If there is a hole in the piston b/c engine was running lean it was a fuel issue, then he needs to verify compression in the cylinder or at least remove head to inspect it.
If in fact it needs piston its a 300 fix and you can do it yourself.

Thanks. What other problems could there be that would cause a backfire through the carbs?

Ok. So I was looking at doing a rebuild of the top end if in fact there is a problem with one of the pistons. Does anyone know if there is a specific kit that I need to get for a 99 challenger 1800 with two 787s? I did a search online but it is hard to determine which one will be correct for my boat. Also this will be the first time I have done this. How hard is a top end rebuild?

Send cyl jugs to fullbore for 300 bucks. You get everything you need. They hone and send it back with new pistons and gaskets.
