I recently sold one of my GTX's and got an awsome deal on a 98 xp I never owned a xp before only thing im familar with is the 951 motor... Only issue it had was the raves needed cleaning. Cleaned and took it out tonight on the lake and was hitting max rpms and running 60mph. Only thing i noticed is there was about three inches of water in back of hull right up to the bottom of bilge pump so im assuming the pump is doing its job being water was right up to the bottom of pump, however is it normal with this model to have few inches of water in them after ridding hard, had it out with wife and me for about an hr. Thanks for any advice in advance.

it's normal to have water in all seadoo's. THe carbon seal leaks, and water comes in.

BUT... on the spring seat XP's... it's known that water will come in the rear hatch. You may want to verify that the gasket is in good shape, and is complete. (no missing parts, or gaps)

rear hatch? and the front :) and the hood and the seat lol.

I can put the trim down on my 02 XP lean forward and sink the WHOLE thing down to the handlebars. or trim up and vertically jump it on it's self... I regularly get way too much water in it.

my 02 has an electric bilge pump in addition to the 2 scuppers. I'm not sure what year that was added, but if you ride like me, you need one.

The 98 just has the water pump and Im assuming its working... I hear a pump noise the instant i plug key in... But water wasnt above the pump... Again was just ridding it for first time out the lake and up the river... Im use to my GTXs the XP is way more fun and aggresive!! that thing scoots across the water! The hatches all seem to be water tight but will check them again. Thanks for all the info.

If you do any aggressive riding on an XP 1997+, especially with two people on it, you will get some water in it.

test it

fill the hull w/water from a hose on the trailer. carefully, (tilt ski back).... to cover the water pump. (shouldn't need much).

press start with the key OFF. it will (should) run the pump for 33 seconds. water should shoot out the top right of the back of the ski near the jet pump.

they have a wire mesh filter that clogs easily when oil gets in the hull and mixes w/water.

also remove your black scuppers and clean them. they only work well when 100% CLEAN.

neat ! I never knew this.

yes. if you press START with the key OFF on any DESS ski, it will run the gauges / accessories for 33 seconds.

this lets you check hours, fuel level, etc, without the key. or even the time if you have such a gauge.

Page 215:

Gauges Current Supply
The purpose of this function is to allow reading of
gauges without the engine running. It will give access
to most functions of the information center
gauge without starting the engine.
Gauges are supplied with current for 33 seconds
when connecting the safety lanyard cap on its post
or when pressing the start/stop switch without
the safety lanyard on the DESS post.
NOTE: The fuel pump will be activated for 2 seconds
to build up pressure in the fuel injection system,
only when connecting the safety lanyard cap
to the post.
