Hey all, I've recently purchased a 98 XP Limited.
It's been running decently well for the last few weeks, but all along I've had an issue where I connect the lanyard, the gauges power up, but nothing happens when i hit the start button. It seemed to work fine after I disconnect and reconnect the lanyard once or twice.
Now, today I was resealing an exhaust leak on it, get everything back together, go to test it and no start at all no matter which lanyard I use or how many times I reconnect it. Checked voltage and it's 12.4 right to the power lead of the starter solenoid, no fuses are cooked, terminals are clean at battery and solenoid. Connections are all tight. The gauges still power up and the auto bilge pump cycles as usual but no start. I jumped the starter solenoid terminals and the starter finally turned but made a harsh almost grinding sound. But that could be just because it was only getting partial current required to turn.
I also tested the starter lead side of solenoid when pressing start button, and no power getting to it.

Previous owner put a new starter in it approx 2 months ago.
Should I tear everything apart again and remove the starter to investigate? Or is this something else?

I'm also reading that i'm supposed to hear a beep when i put on the lanyard, since day one I'm yet to hear any beeps from it...

those beepers go bad, mine never worked. u can replace them, or sometimes they beep real low. everyonece while u can bang on the bars and they will work.

I did get a lot of water in that area last ride two days ago as my passenger and I rolled it over a few times. Ill pull apart the covers on the bars and check things out. Damn unstable xp!

Ok, so I've got the switches all torn apart, tested the start switch seemed good, hooked it all back up again, tested and it started right up. Tried a few times, was all good. Now it stopped working again...

did you look into the dess post ? also sounds like the relay could be going. both pretty cheap. gotta love elec probs...

Looks like I figured it out! (I hope) the lower connector on the mpem is missing the upper lock tab and I mustve bumped it when I was re and re'ing the exhaust. Plugged it back in tight and taped/zip tied it in and I can't get it to fail anymore!

So now after my first lake test, no issues starting anymore, runs great, except for when it seems I get to full throttle it will all of a sudden die and require the lanyard to come off and back on again, then starts up and runs fine..
It doesn't feel like a fueling issue, definitely electrical...

Also now I'm at the boat launch and got nothinhg, ddrove off the trailer, was fine, now nothing at all after parking trailer
