I have been looking at the forum and found a thread from 2009 discussing the carbon seal. The pictures I have seen of the area in the hull shown like a CVT boot. Mine has a rubber hose. The previous owner said that it takes on water and I'm assuming that it is the carbon seal. The two turbine housing bilge tubes and all hoses are in place as well. My question is. What is supposed to be in there? A boot or hose?image.jpg

Your ski should have the hose, and an aluminum housing with a needle bearing in it and a double lip seal at both ends. On the aluminum housing you should have zerk fitting to inject grease to keep the bearing lubed. If you don't keep it lubed it will seize to the shaft and rotate and rip the thru hull fitting, allowing water to enter the ski. So, grab the hose and see if it rotates, or start the ski and look back there. If the hose and aluminum are rotating you have a broken thru hull fitting.

If the through hull fitting was cracked or broke shouldn't it fill with water just sitting in the lake? I haven't had a jet ski in about 20 years so I'm trying to get back to getting familiar with it.

Yep that is correct, but you didn't specify when the water was entering. Your ski did not come from the factory with the carbon seal or accordion boot.

Sorry. The previous owner said that it takes on water. I have to install a new electric bilge pump since the old one went bad. I'm planning on filling the hull with some water from a hose and seeing if there are any leaks. I won't have a chance to see if it takes on water til next year. I am going to spray the intake area with a garden hose to see if any water is entering the shaft seal.

There are two types of hull seals. The carbon seal, which I think you read about and then a bearing style which I believe you have according to Racerxxx. I'm only mentioning this for the mere fact of knowledge in the event you were not aware of the difference.

They basically do the same job but ENTIRELY different manners.

If you want further info on the difference, just ask.
