I'm so smart.... just bought a 97 xp that "just needs a starter as far as I know". Put in new starter plus new solenoid for good measure. Went to put key on post and.... no post! Open hole where it used to be. Order new post. Wire 3 wires of new post to existing 3 wires in steering column and still no start. Just a red light on the dash and a long beep. Ideas? Maybe the battery I used isn't good anymore? Advice greatly appreciated.

Could be a bad Dess post, or the seller gave you the wrong key. Can you jump
The solenoid and the engine will turn over?

I you are getting one long beep then as said, the MPEM is not recognizing the key. It will not run without resolving this issue.
You can send the MPEM and key to someone like Westside Powersports Seadoo that can test the MPEM and key and bind a new key to the MPEM if needed.
