How difficult is it to remove the starter? When I try to crank it, it makes a weird clicking noise then it sounds like the starter is just spinning freely. Any ideas?

if you can, connect cables to the starter, see if it kicks the bendix out, and turns motor. Might be your relay going bad and/or bad/going bad battery

So just connect the battery straight to the starter? If it turns the motor over its the relay, if not it is .....

wouldnt say relay, only after you've checked your cable connections and grounds, make sure they're clean/non corroded/broken...if it dont kick out and turn, then yeah, starter...you can rebuild your oem one though.

there are three bolts i believe two that head from front of motor to the back of the motor and one that goes from under the carbs back towards the back side of the cylinders. I leave the red cable on some times it helps fish it out. the front side bolt is threaded throuhg the motor case has a nut on the back side that hols the ground you have to take off.

So 2 bolts that run front to back and on that runs side to side at the tail end of the starter

thanks for the info. The one that goes side to side is stripped out :mad::mad:

its so hard to get to. I have no idea how im going to get it out

i have done a few starters before. Its all about position lol. The last one I did took me 1.5 hours. I figured it to be 10 min max. That bolt is the worst I have the previous hull which has less space which makes it a little harder. when using a wrench and only geting about a 16th of a turn each time combined with droping the wrench about 400 times I was ready to give it a slight push off the dock with a pound and a half of C4 and watch the fireworks. No lie

most agrivating thing ever.

I just used the standard 90 degree allen, They make allens that go on a rachet might want to try that. but if its striped vice grips?

just 2 bolts. its really not that hard to get to. use liquid wrench if its stripped out and if u can somehow get the bolt out, buy a new one. might cost you 5 bucks but u will be taking the starter on and off alot when you are trouble shooting starting problems

okay we got the starter off, starter turns out to be good. So we put a brand new battery in it and try to start it.... doesnt want to turn over. So we take out the plugs and they are rusted... hmmm... so we pop off the head cover and what do ya think we saw? Water chilling on top of some rusty pistons.

If you have water on the tops of your pistons more than likely the entire bottom end is full of water too. If you live in a cold climate (freezing temps) might have other problems ie cracked block. did you roll your ski? water just doesnt go in there, you got and issue with your motor, wheter it be a roll over, cracked block, water geting in the cylinders around the head.

Depending on how long the waters be in there, Id say you going to have compression issues, pitted cylinder walls, crank issues, from the rust. I dont know the full story but to me sould like your going to be rebuilding.

So...why not run it, til she goes?

With head off, inspect the o-rings and go from three, as far as replacing any gaskets, o-rings...but i'd run it.

Im just saying I wouldnt, even if he does get it running if he takes it out on the water no telling how long it will last, I wouldnt want to be stranded.

He can do what ever he wants to do. just advice.

Just would be a poor decission to dump money into something that is known to have an issue and not correct it with the money your pooring into it. Fix the obvious stuff first. water/rust in the cylinders should be the first thing he looks into fixing in my opinion.

Try taking the spark plugs out and spraying some bp blaster in and letting it sit for about 20 or 30 mins then try and turn the motor over. Then spray some wd-40 in it.

You need to tear down the engine and do a complete rebuild. Do not just get it going and run it. You risk destroying the head, cylinders, and crankcase if a rod breaks, turning a repairable engine into a throw away. Also, it may leave you stranded a long ways from shore. Do not cheap out because if you can't afford to do it right, you sure won't be able to afford to do it over.
