Hi everyone, I am new here. Great site too. I have a 97 speedster I just bought a couple of months ago. The one engine runs ok. the other one is hard to start and likes the choke. It idles a little low, maybe 1200 at idle in water. Tonight I checked the low speed mixture and it was exactly one turn out. And sometimes when idling it will stall. Could this be from the lower idle speed? Also when accelerating this engine will be about a thousand rpms higher than the other one. That symptom it just started. Any ideas on where to start looking?

First... I would adjust the idle to match the other engine. It should be around 1500 rpm's. That should help it from stalling, and make it a little easier to start in the water too. (adjust the idle in the water)

Running a little higher than the other engine tells me you have some pump parts that need some love. Either your impeller and wear ring need some attention... or the carbon seal is wearing out.

Let us know what you find.

The boat has new wear rings and carbon seals. Today I started it out of the water on the hose adjusted idle but will fine tune when on the water. I'll tell yea the motor sounds a heck of a lot healthier with the idle around 3k, it was at 2k out of the water. i also trimmed back plug wires today. This weekend will come the true test. But now I am focused on that motors rpm going so much quicker. Is there anything else besides the pump that would cause that?

Since I idled up the motor it seems to start much easier and stay running but the pump isd cavitating . The carbon seal was replaced as well as the wear ring. Couls the carbon seall be bad again already?

It could if you run it a lot out of the water. The carbon seal needs water to keep it cooled and lubed.

BUT... more likely, its a light leak around the pump. When the carbon seal goes bad, you will throttle up, and all of the sudden, it will jump to 7000 RPMs.

One more thing to check is the throttle positions. Take the flame arrestors off, and push both levers up to half throttle. Then look in the carbs to see if the butterflies are in the same place. (engine to engine) The cables may just need a little adjustment.

just a quick question, im having idling promlems also with one engine....where is the screw you adjust for your idle located??

thanks alot!

Fuel Filter or Rave valve cover clearance

Check fuel filter on firewall, its a canister with two fuel lines attached. Replace filter, cheap and easy to install. Next if that does not fix, pull rave valve cover and check for wear, if worn replace. Just a few thoughts. Good luck. Just took shrink wrap and put batteries in for summer. Cant wait to splash it!
