Finally found out why my ski won't start the gasket under the cylinder jugs failed and is leaking air. Also there seems to be a lot of fuel dumping from the carbs, even know I rebuilt them. I think it's the brass needles and seats, since I didn't replace them..

Here's my question does the engine have to be removed in order to change out the gasket for by 97 GSX?

Second question do you think the carb issue is the needle and seat too ?

Who rebuilt the engine? Is it still under warranty? If it is, don't open it up or you will void the warranty. You can change the base gasket without removing the motor. Regarding your fuel issue, I think the needle and seat are leaking. Did you use Mikuni kit to do the carb rebuild?

The engine is a SBT with 20 hours on it, but I removed the topend to powder coat and use a new base gasket. I also rebuilt the carbs using the other brand rebuilt kits, but never replaced the needle and seat. Because I didn't know what size ti use with a coffmsn pipe.

Here's a picture of the engine.

I think by opening up the engine you may have voided your warranty. At least that is the case with SES, SBT may be different but I doubt it. I also read somewhere that the nipple on the diaphram in the aftermarket carb kits is a little longer than the Mikuni kits. I think the fix for that may be to bend the lever down a bit below flush. Doc would know more about that. I would just rebuild with Mikuni kit and pressure test the needle and seat to make sure they are not leaking.

The motor is already pasted it's one year. But when i change the base gasket i was told to use a high temp sealant. But do you still think i could replace that gasket again, but inside the ski?

I would try and replace it where it is, if you can't then the motor needs to come out. My motor was rebuilt by SES and I don't think any sealant was used on the base gasket. They just assembled it dry.

I think the seatant was the failure. I think to be safe I should replace the needle snd seat anyway, there cheap just need to figure out what size to use with my coffman pipe.

I was able to remove the jugs today, just have to order a new base gasket and exhaust gasket.

Did you order the right one? There are a few... and they are different thickness's.

Also... as above... do not put any sealant on it. If the parts were properly machined... the gasket will seal.

I hope i can slide the jugs back on at that angle.

Put a ring compressor on it... and it should slide right on.

The guy at the shop told me to use high temp sealant of the base gasket and exhaust manifold.
Can I get a ring compressor at AutoZone?

Also i think the reason the carbs dump too much fuel is the needle and sent, I only replaced the little rubber O-rings is the one's that came in the carb kits, was that right? I used the WINDEROSA rebuild kits and the mechanic says they sucks, is that true, should I build them with OEM one's?

Do not use sealant on the base gasket, just install the base gasket. On the base gasket you peeled off it should have holes in it that will tell you which thickness you need. I am assuming it is a 5 or 6 mill. To check you can do a squish test which the directions for that is in your manual. Lose the winderosa kits and buy mikuni rebuild kits. The main thing you need to replace isthe needle and seat, they are 1.5s. Do a leak down test on your carbs with a pop off tester. If you have a leak you will need to take care of that. Usually its your needle and seat or the check valves. Winderosa kits are junk.

I put Threebond 1211 (very thin line of it) on/around my base gasket but thats after the other one without and sealant on it pushed out after 30 mins of break in, didnt want to chance it again. I have 6 hours on the motor and it seems to be holding up fine.

I only see 3mm gaskets, that includes OEM.

Just received some parts today. The base and exhaust gaskets and new pair of needle and seats for the carbs...

Ok redid base gasket and install new needle and seats in carbs. Engine wants to run but stalls, weather i give it gas or not. Spark plugs become soaked with a gas and dark oil. I use premix, but the gas is clearer in the inline filter. Any suggestions?

Did you check and make sure the needle and seat are not leaking? What did you set your mixture at? Could it be the idle is set too low?

Its been a while since my last update. Well after spending almost $500 at Jet Trenz and till no running ski, as you guys read in previous posts; I wrote a letter to SBT since it was one of their rebuilt engines and the President CJ Cummings offer to have some of his guys look over the ski, since they were going into the slow season. I received a voice mail message yesterday from CJ and they got the ski running and were going to water test it Monday. He didn't say what was causing all the issues, but once I find out I will let you all know. Thanks God there good people out there who help others in need.
