My 97 gtx will not go over 5 mph but engine revs fine. I know I picked up some trash when I finally got it home I found a 3/4" x 4" long stick stuck between the impeller and the bronze vanes. I removed grate and there was a very small amount of debris in the inlet. I have not had a chance to put it back in the water to see if it will move. my question is was the stick causing it not to move or did the stick damage something? it acts like a boat i had that the prop came loose.

you may have damaged the wear ring and that will make the water pretty much just bypass the impeller and create no pressure for propulsion

I have ruined a wear ring from a stick stuck in the pump... It tends to wear the plastic pretty quickly if it is a tough stick, then the impeller looses thrust from lack of pump pressure.

update

OK so I removed jet pump. both wear ring and impeller look ok. wear ring clearance is at .022. wear ring has some scratches but no big gouges like I was expecting. removed driveshaft splines are good on shaft, impeller and drive coupler. driveshaft boot is not torn and seal appears ok.Guess I'll put it back together an see what happens.
