My GTX will run fine at the start, but drops down to about 3,500 rpm's... then act as if it wants to rev back up, but settles around 3,500 rpm's.. from a dead start it acts and runs fine, but drops back down to 3,500 rpm's again...

Does the GTX still have the old, grey "Tempo" fuel lines? If so, and if you don't know, there's a long and documented history with these fuel lines degrading due to (I think) E85 fuel (with the alcohol). The alcohol causes the fuel line to break down and clog the carburetors, causing all sorts of problems.

I pulled the carbs off my 97 GSX and stated cleaning them just today. First time I've ever done this. Look at what I found inside:

That's gunk completely blocking that 90 degree fuel elbow. and a pile of it on the end of a regular jeweler's screwdriver. The pieces of "fur" are what got stuck in the gunk when I tried to force a pipe cleaner through the gunk. It took almost an hour to clean that elbow, using a cordless drill, 90% alcohol, and pipe cleaners folded in half. I screwed them into the cordless drill's chuck and augered that elbow like you'd roto-rooter a commode. It's clean now. It was filled with gook about 1/2" deep, plus all the hairs that got mixed in from the pipe cleaners.
