97 GTX PTO and driveshaft splines stripped

Afternoon all,

I'm new to all this and recent purchased a 97 gtx and Xp. I took out the gtx for the first time and ran ok, cavitated alittle bit. But while cruising the ski stopped moving and revved up. After I got it home and taken apart( with the help of a seadoo guy) I found that the PTO and driveshaft were stripped.
What causes this?
Also all parts diagrams show three Orings on the driveshaft under the metal piece in front of the carbon ring. Mine only had one Oring. And I lost it.
Can I just go buy any Oring or should I buy the one made for it. And where do the other two go that I'm missing.
Btw before I took it all apart I saw that the PTO boot was all ripped up and falling apart.

does the impeller turn freely? if its partially froze can be a cause of stripped shaft and pto. may want to inspect pump oil for water and make sure the bearings and impeller shaft are in good condition. maybe some trash got in there. maybe it sucked a rope at one time causing damage to the splines. make sure the impeller shaft is true, could be bent?

It is not uncommon for a drive shaft spline failure. It is one of the somewhat weak links in the Seadoo skis. You must have the rubber stoppers that go on the end of the shaft. Without them, the shaft moves about 1/4 of an inch and allow for the failure.

It did suck up some weeds from the lake. Impeller seems to spin smoothly.

The PTO boot was destroyed when I removed it and only held on with zip ties. So guess that could have been it

To test this, slide it in until it stops. Back it out a bit. Does is free spin, slide it in and spin again, what happens?

It is all disassembled now. But when it was together if the driveshaft was pushed all the way in it would free spin. If I pulled it out about an inch it would lock in and no longer free spin. You can see from the pictures how the splines were

That PTO is shot. So is the shaft in my eyes. No sense in putting a potentially damaged spline back into a good PTO. Contact Minnetonka4me he'll get you juiced up with good used parts. I would at a minimum align the engine. The mounts will sag after years and also you don't know if the engine has ever been out and never re-aligned when reinstalled. You will need an alignment tool to do so. Depending on where you are in location to Coastie, he has one he rents out, or just buy one. Definitely a tool I wouldn't be without, but then again I have a handful of skis.

Possibly free shipping

Same company, no free shipping I think

I've already purchased a brand new PTO, driveshaft, and PTO boot. I will align the motor and replace those parts. Anything else I should replace while its apart.

inspect the carbon seal and boot, inspect the pump, wear ring and impeller, see if there is any water present in the pump oil. pump oil probably needs changed anyways.

What's the wear ring look like? Max gap is 0.040" or 1.0mm, so a dime should not be able to fit in there. Change the oil, check the bearings. Make sure the rubber bumpers are in there on the ends of the new driveshaft. New neoprene pump seal to seal the pump to the pump mount support. Inspect the carbon ring, if it was held in place with a o-ring swap that out to the updated C-clip.

If you need part#'s or pics just let me know and I can post them up.

If it takes an inch to stop from spinning then it needs replaced. If only 1/4 of an inch, then it is ok. As I said earlier, it is a pretty common failure. Many here have replaced them.

Minnetonka4me is where I would get parts from in the future. No BS and the price is very fair. They will be OEM parts or better based on his knowledge of Seadoo's.

Ouch...you bought new OEM parts? I could have saved you a chit ton....

Do you get new parts or just used?
Cause it looks like I need the c clip for the drive shaft, the pump seal to pump support, and the cone seal so I can change the oil. And maybe a new wear ring.

Tonka probably has all those "wear" items new in stock.. The PTO and drive shaft would have been clean used items.
