97 GTX hi rpms cause bogging

Just got a 97 GTX included with the purchase of a house on the water. Blew out the oil from the winterization. New plugs. New battery. Got her fired up and she ran like a bat out of hell for maybe a half hour.
Shut her down for a few minutes to sit on the beach. Got back on her and started tooling around and began to notice some hesitation towards the top end (maybe 4500-5000 rpm).
I took her back across the bay into some chop and it got worse when i began to bounce and the RPM's would rev when she came out of the water a little bit. Sounded and felt like it was running out of fuel.
After a day or two of my thinking if I just got her on flat water and ran her for a good while that it may work itself out, it's only gotten worse.
If I drop all the way back down to idle once the hi-end bouncing/surging/bogging begins and just motor at idle speed for 10 seconds, i can start to massage the throttle back up to speed, but only until we start bouncing a bit again and the RPM's surge.
This ski was not used much in the last couple of years. Has a half tank of fuel (certainly older fuel, but still firing).
After reading a fw threads on this forum (great forum by the way), sounds like this is a fairly common problem and is likely not fixed by changing out some the oil and fuel filters and siphoning/replacing gas and oil with fresh.....
Any other recommendations for diagnosing??

97 GTX bogging down

This problem seems to be getting worse. I can coax the throttle up to about 4500 RPM and cruise for a couple minutes before it just dies completely. And if i try to open it all the way up, it just dies on me. Sometimes it boggs down to a shakey idle. Other times it will shut completely off.

MPEM? RECTIFIER? I have no idea and just about ready to try to trade-in....
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
