97 GTS running rough

All,

I have searched forum for answers and have drawn a blank.

I was running ski yesterday at full throttle. On my way back to marina, at full throttle, motor revved really high (as if you revved your car in neutral), ski slowed down, almost as if I had cavitation. However, once I backed off throttle, engine immediately began to run very rough. High engine vibration, almost as if the engine itself came loose from the mounts.

Limped back to marina barely above idle. Engine continued to run rough. Tried to give the ski more throttle, but engine wouldn't take it and would continue barely above idle, running rough, and if I let go of throttle, engine would die. It would crank again immediately, but only with help from the throttle. Engine vibration still high.

As I approached marina ramp, engine began to smoke. Blue smoke.

Got it home today, check plugs (good), compression (140-150 psi both cylinders). Engine not blown, whew. Ski will crank immediately. Fuel and oil are good, quantity and quality. Also, wear ring and impeller look good, but did discover stator has a large piece missing from one vane. Seems like if that piece let go, it would break away from engine into water, not be sucked up. Did check water intake line into engine, no blockage there.

Any ideas? Fuel lines have been changed, but they appear to be old. They are not gray, but black, with obvious wear and tear. If it is a blocked fuel line, would it cause the engine to smoke? This is not exhaust smoke. It comes from somewhere in the engine compartment. Thanks.

I had the same problem with my gtx rfi it all of a sudden just quit except I couldn't get it started ever again. It turned out to be the fuel sender.

What engine do you have in there?

If its an 800, Could be the counterbalance shaft stripping and cracking the case. That would explain the vibration, high rev, from less load and running lean, rough running, no power, and smoke in the engine bay...

Pull the plugs and turn the engine over by hand. Try rocking it slightly back and forth and listen for the gears meshing.

look around with a mirror under the engine and look for cracks.

Just for kicks, try unplugging the red wire on the voltage regulator/rectifier. If the ski runs O.K. with the red wire disconnected replace the voltage regulator. Electrical problems and cause the MPEM to start doing crazy things.

Something is coming apart...pull on the motor and see if the mounts are breaking, then pull the pump and see if the bearings are shredding.

If you dont find anything I would assume something is coming apart in the motor and it hasnt affected compression. Yet.

I had similiar symptoms 2 times

1st time was on a 97 gsi with a single carb 720. The body of the carb cracked around the butterfly rod.

Replaced and was fine

The 2nd time it was my rectifier on a 96 xp. It felt like I was running on one cylinder and was cavatating. What was strange is I would turn it off and immediately restart it and it would run fine for 1-2 minutes.

Yeah rectifiers have crazy symptoms but the 580-720 rectifiers rarely go bad. The 787s do all the time.

Well, today I discovered the exhaust pipes had become separated, hence the smoke in engine compartment. I guess they came loose while I was riding. I put them back together and engine seems fine. That would explain vibration and noise from engine compartment. The good thing about this is I am now intimately familiar with my fuel system. Took lines, tank, filter, selector valve off for cleaning. Fuel baffle unit looked good and tested good for fuel gauge
out of tank. But in the tank with fuel, it is not showing a reading. Oh well. Thanks again for the help. Hopefully that was the only problem.

Actually, most likely it needs the baffle repaired being a 97, but it could be the float.

On the exhaust, its a typical problem. It usually means the rubber pipe mount thats bolts the pipe to the mani on the side is wore out.

I put a new float in the baffle. I will just use the eyeball method for now. Got the exhaust back together nice and tight.
