97 GTI Starting Problem

I have a 97 GTI that I just got out for the season . I had it at a shop last year because of starting issues and langyard issues .When I try and start it sometimes it would start and other times not . I just put the batteries in them and the ones fine but not the other . Turned over okay at first but didn't start , I tried it again and the starter enage then disengage over and over but not turn over the engine . So I pulled the plugs out and turned it over , turned over okay . I put the plugs back in and tried it again and I get the 2 beeps when I plug in the langyard but when I hit the start button it engages then makes a beep , it doesn't turn over it just beeps . Thanks for any help .

No the batterys fine , went back out alittle bit later and is started fine . Thats the problem its not consistent , thats why I'm having a hard time figuring it out . Thanks for the reply .
