Hey guys my 97 gsx speedo gauge isnt working. The digital gauge reads zero at all times and the mechanical speedo stays at zero too. I also noticed my fuel gauge doesnt work either. Are these tied together at all? And my VTS button is missing so I cannot adjust the trim, is there any way to adjust it manually, and if so where is a good place to set it? Thanks in advance!

If the button is missing... it's hard to say what could be wrong with it. Get the wiring schematic, and figure out what else is missing.

You could check the purple+ (positive) wire going to the cluster and the Black- (ground). It just might be a bad fuse or wire connection. The best position for the VTS would be neutral, or level to the doo bottom . Adjust it till it's right for your weight and riding style. I don't think you can adjust it manually.

Well im not going to worry about the VTS right now... im more worried about the speedo and fuel. Is there a certain ohm its supposed to be putting out? any advice is appreciated!

Here is some information on the fuel guage;

Checking sending unit resistance

You need to check the Pink and Pink/Black wire coming out of the baffle tube in the gas tank. The sending unit works off resistance. Pull the plug apart at the tank, and use an ohm meter to check for resistance between the two pink wires. The resistance will be different depending on how much fuel is in the fuel tank. If you get no resistance, remove the clamps off the sender, and pull the sending unit out of the fuel tank. Check the magnets on the float in the sending unit. To get to the float out, pop the bottom off and look for the 4 magnets on the float. If they are missing use a strong magnet to get them out of the tank bottom. If they are dirty clean them and re-insert it back in the baffle tube and check the wires again to check for readings of resistance depending on where the float is in the baffle tube. Check the float to see if it “floats” in a cup of gas. Sometimes the float becomes saturated and won’t float in gas…but it will in water, so use gas to check it. If still no reading of resistance replace the sender. If you get readings, check continuity of wiring to gauge. At the baffle you could un plug the guage and using a jumper wire between the 2 wires in the plug on the guage side. Attach the lanyard to power up the gauges. If the guage goes to full the guage is good. If it still doesn’t respond, do a continuity test of the wires to the guage. If all wiring checks out ok, and the guage still doesn’t respond, the gauge is bad.

...and some info on the spedo:

Spedo restiance
For the Speedo on the rear of the boat is a sender that uses a little wheel with 3 wires. 2 are for the the speed, and 1 is for temp. if your boat is equiped with the temp. quage. Using a multi meter attached to 2 of the wires, and spin the wheel you seed read restiance depending on how fast you spin the little wheel. Then check contunity on the wires to the guage. If it isn't reading it might be a broken wire. If it sends a signal to the guage, the guage is bad.

I hope this helps you out.

I had the same problem on my 96 XP the fuel gauge wasn't working, light on. Magnet fell out of hard foam float. Put it in a cup of gas and it floated. Cleaned the 1 magnet and put it back in the middle of the float very tight fit. Tested it while the sender was still out. Put the float in all the way up and with the key out pushed the start button and gauge read full.

Problem fixed.

Now I just have to fix my spedo. Digital gauge reads mph but the anolog doesn't budge.

Good luck to you.
